Accessing Oakland's Business Incubators

The University’s two incubators, Oakland (in Rochester Hills) and Macomb (in Sterling Heights), encompass 68,000 sq.ft.; they are both roughly the same size. They provide entrepreneurs an invaluable resource for beginning businesses. They are integral components of the MZ in that they provide a nexus for local business activities: economically priced startup costs, educational programs, mentorship, networking, access to investors, linkage to State-funded economic development and innovation resources, etc.

Currently, the two incubators have 32 tenant companies (leasing space) and 60 affiliate companies that utilize incubator services without leasing space. Tenant and affiliate companies pay a low fee to access services: business and financial advisors, educational seminars and workshops, Entrepreneurs-in-Residence, assistance in fundraising, etc. This fee also allows access to conference rooms, collaboration centers and shared office space.

The total economic impact of the two incubators over the last 5 years is $131 million.

Each incubator is host to diverse types of high-technology companies and has its own focus areas:

  • Advanced Materials
  • Biomedical/Biotechnical
  • Energy (Fossil & Renewable)
  • IT & Telecommunications
