Banner is a comprehensive student information system that delivers a full range of functions from strategic management to records processing. It provides a central repository for current student information.

Get ready — ​ Banner 9 will be here before you know it!

​The new Banner administrative pages have several usability improvements such as better navigation and search features, and a new standard look and feel. It has a modernized user interface with industry-standard web controls and no longer relies on older Java technology.

There are still many familiar concepts and a similar page layout containing a key block at top and sections or tabs below displaying data. There is an improved system messaging, where you can easily see success, warning, and/or error notifications.

Banner 9 is mobile-friendly, perfect for on-the-go recruiting and advising.

Advising Caseloads in Ellucian Banner
Initial Requirements

Assignment and maintenance of caseloads in Banner has three components that allow you to code assignments to the desired advising area, indicate who is an adviser and grant permissions to create and maintain adviser assignments.

Advising Code - The advising code is a 4, or less, character code with a description not to exceed 30 characters. Existing codes can be viewed on the STVADVR Banner screen or the table of the same name. Look to see what is there before requesting a new code. If you need a new code, contact Christy Bryant (cbryant3@oakland.edu) with the request. Alert any area doing regular reporting on advising as to the new code and what it means.

Identifying Advisers in Banner - In order for the Banner system to know that someone is an adviser, they must be marked as such in the SIAINST form. You can check users in SIAINST, or through queries to the SIBINST table, to see their status. If you need to have someone marked as an adviser in SIAINST, contact Christy Bryant in the Registrar’ office. You will need to let Christy know their name and last 4 digits of the G #.

Caseload Maintenance - The ability to assign, change or delete an adviser assignment requires a special class permission in Banner. Using the Banner Access Request form at forms.oakland.edu, request the addition of the BAN_COHORT_UPDATE_C class for those users who need to maintain caseload.
