Emergency Communications
Oakland University uses multiple methods to communicate with the campus community. The sections below list the various ways you will be alerted in different situations.

Official closings/cancellations
If Oakland University will be closed or classes will be cancelled, the following communications methods will be implemented:
  • Posting on OU home page
  • Text message alert to registered cell phone numbers
  • Recorded message at (248) 370-2000
  • Notification of campus operator
  • Notification of media outlets including WJBK-TV FOX 2, WDIV-TV Channel 4, WXYZ-TV Channel 7, WJR AM 760 and WWJ AM 950
Tornado warnings
Oakland University has installed a tornado siren on the roof of Varner Hall, which is activated for tornado warnings. The National Weather Service of the Oakland County Division of Emergency Response and Preparedness are the only agencies authorized to activate the siren. The Varner Hall siren is activated only after a funnel cloud has been sighted, or strongly indicated by radar, in or near Oakland County. The siren is routinely tested at 1 p.m. on the first Saturday of each month during tornado season.

In addition to the siren activation, OUPD has the capability to contact a select group of faculty and staff members who have been given guidelines to follow for purposes of alerting others in the event of a severe weather/tornado warning. An alert will also be sent to ranking officials, including all members of the Crisis Management Team.

Imminent danger and Clery Act notifications
When a criminal act takes place on campus and may represent a continuing threat, the Clery Act requires the university to notify students in a timely manner. Clery Act notifications are communicated via one or more of the methods listed below. In the event that members of our campus community are in imminent danger, or in the event of a lock down, all available methods of communication may be enacted. These include:
  • Posting on OU home page
  • Text message alert to registered cell phone numbers
  • Broadcast e-mail to all student, faculty and staff OU addresses
  • Broadcast voicemail to all campus phones
  • Notification of campus operator
  • Notification of media outlets including WJBK-TV FOX 2, WDIV-TV Channel 4, WXYZ-TV Channel 7, WJR AM 760 and WWJ AM 950
  • Broadcast on campus-wide outdoor public address system
  • Loudspeaker systems in patrolling police cars
  • Posting of flyers on doors throughout campus
  • Word of mouth
Keep in mind that while crisis communications are sent as immediately as possible, text, email, and voicemail broadcast delivery methods may be impeded by delayed delivery due to technological shortfalls. Therefore, the best place to receive the most up-to-date information during or following a campus emergency is the OU home page. Updates to the website become visible immediately. In the event of an emergency that disables OU's servers, a contingency website on an off-campus server can be quickly launched and updated.
