Teacher Recertification

In the summer of 2011, the State of Michigan passed several school and tenure reform bills. The Michigan Department of Education then created new administrative rules to comply with the new laws. The updated rules will impact all levels of teacher certification. Make sure you view the revised Teacher Certification Code in its entirety. Visit the SEHS Advising page for more information on continuing certification and the renewal process.

The Office of Professional Development and Education Outreach offers various individual courses to meet the needs of teacher certificate renewals and continuing education. Please visit the following tabs for course options.

Upgrade your ZA endorsement to the newer and more inclusive ZS endorsement with our new bridge option:
  
ZA Endorsement + only 2 courses + MTTC ZS Test = ZS Endorsement

BENEFITS:
  • attain the State Board of Education's revised standards reflecting the knowledge and skills needed to teach children from birth to age 8 in general education settings, as well as significant knowledge and skills teaching children with disabilities

WINTER 2015 (January 6 - April 28, 2015)
Course: EC 553: ECSE: Programming, Planning & Intervention (Credit Hours: 4) 
Location: Macomb ISD, Clinton Township, MI
Dates/Time: Wednesday from 5:00-8:20 p.m.
Description: This course focuses on linking the foundational components to professional practice in the field of Early Childhood Special Education.  Practical applications of teaming, assessment, family centered practice and child focused approaches will be addressed, with particular attention to the themes of diversity, inclusion, and technology.  A field experience is built into the course.

FALL 2015 (September 2 - December 15, 2015)
Course: EC 552 – Introduction to Early Childhood Special Education (Credit Hours: 4)
Location: Macomb ISD, Clinton Township, MI
Dates/Time: Wednesday from 5:00-8:20 p.m.
Description: This course focuses on early childhood special education (ECSE) as a unique discipline similar to, but distinctly different than early childhood education and special education. Teaming, assessment, family centered practice, and child focused practices within multiple contexts of ECSE will be addressed. Activities will take place that encourage reflective practice.  A field experience is built into the course.

Request additional information about upgrading to the ZS endorsement.


LIMITED NUMBER OF TUITION SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE TO GET YOU STARTED:

Any new student who is approved to start the ZA-ZS Upgrade Option in Winter 2015 and enrolls in EC 553 as their first course will be eligible to receive the Macomb Initiative Scholarship.
             
The Macomb Initiative Scholarship provides a $150.00 per-credit-hour award to educators enrolled in the following course(s): EC 553.  Scholarships are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.  This award is non-renewable and the student recipient must meet the eligibility requirements.  This scholarship may be used for tuition only. 

Eligibility Requirements include:
  • Courses must be scheduled at the Macomb ISD at 44001 Garfield Road 
  • Show proof of an earned bachelor’s degree 
  • Be admitted as a “professional development” student or enrolled in an existing graduate program 
  • Teacher/Administrator certificates and endorsements must be current
  • All qualifications will be reviewed by the Early Childhood Program Director prior to registration

EMATHS Online Geometry and Algebra Courses

In partnership with the Macomb Intermediate School District, Oakland University is offering secondary mathematics teachers the opportunity to earn graduate credit for the following courses.  All courses are three (3) graduate credits:

  • EMATHS Online Geometry
  • EMATHS Online Algebra I
  • EMATHS Online Algebra II

These online courses focus on...

  • increasing teachers’ content knowledge,
  • maximizing the effective use of technology in instruction,
  • using research-based pedagogy, and
  • implementing formative assessment for improved instruction. 

All three EMATHS Online courses are modeled after the 8-day face-to-face professional development of “Implementing the Geometry, Algebra I, and II Units.”

Participation in the courses include taking a pre- and post- assessment, watching video of actual presentations by instructors and teacher participants, downloading and completing activities, emailing and sending documents to facilitator, reflecting on instructional practices, making contributions to blog discussions, researching the web, using TI-Nspire technology and software, interacting with fellow teachers, and more.

All courses require the use of the TI-NSpire Handheld Technology.

INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE 6-CREDIT LEADERSHIP COURSES FOR ADMINISTRATORS   
  • Courses will run in Winter 2015 and Fall 2015
  • 6 credits over two-semesters
  • Hybrid format includes two face-to-face sessions on Saturdays at Oakland University's main campus, with additional online learning activities
  • Courses include: Introduction to IB Principles, Practices, & Curriculum (3 credits) and Leaders in IB Schools: Moving Theory to Practice (3-credits)
  • Courses combine an emphasis on administering an IB program, with general administrative practices and recent trends in educational leadership.  The courses are designed and taught by practicing IB administrators and education school professionals.

RDG 510: Inquiry-Based Literacy Instruction

To meet the needs of the Michigan reading requirement, Oakland University offers RDG 510 for 3 or 4 graduate credits.  This course is offered all year round in a hybrid/partially-online format.  For current course offerings, please visit SAIL and do a course search.  RDG 510 will apply to certain graduate programs including the M.Ed. in Special Education.  Upcoming courses are also listed below:
