Overview
The ASD Certificate is an 18- to 24-month, part-time program designed for individuals who currently have or are eligible to receive a teaching certificate in Michigan, and who wish to receive state certification to teach individuals on the autism spectrum. All credits may be applied to the M.Ed. in Special Education, which can be earned with as few as 17 additional credits (approximately 4 courses), depending on prior credentials. The program is currently offered at several on-ground locations including Macomb, Oakland University's main campus, as well as online.
Plan of Study
- View Option A: This option requires an individual to hold a prior special education endorsement in Michigan
- View Option B: This option is for general education teachers and only requires an individual to have a valid MI teaching certificate
In partial fulfillment of the requirements to earn this credential, the Michigan Department of Education requires that candidates complete a minimum of 180 clock hours in a supervised practicum experience teaching students with autism spectrum disorders. The practicum is offered as the final experience required for K-12 certification in ASD. The specific nature of the experience will be individually determined at the time of approval of the practicum request.
