The Option C - Multidisciplinary Perspectives Autism Certificate is for individuals who wish to increase their expertise in Autism Spectrum Disorders, but who do not have and are not seeking a state-approved teaching endorsement. This program was designed to meet the ever-increasing need for advanced formal education in autism for individuals working in disciplines other than teaching, particularly those who routinely serve students with autism (i.e., school psychologists, social workers, behavior specialists, counselors, speech pathologists, occupational therapists, health caregivers).
The Multidisciplinary Perspectives Autism Certificate (Option C) is a 24-credit program. All 24 credits can be applied toward the new Master of Arts in Autism (currently under development), if all courses are completed in the 6-year time frame.

SE 502: Legal Issues in Special Education
This course is an intensive study of
federal legislation and the Michigan Special Education Rules and their
implications for providing services to students with exceptionalities. Evaluation, IEPC's,
related services, free and appropriate education, placement options, adequate
referral and evaluation, investigation and due process hearings are highlighted.
Student must be admitted to program. (4 credits)

SE 559: Overview of Autism Spectrum Disorder
and etiologies of Autism Spectrum Disorders, including Asperger Syndrome
throughout the life span. An overview of
instructional methodologies, legal issues and collaboration with families and
other professionals are introduced. (3 credits)
SE 527: Educational Procedures for Students with ASD
and instruction of students with autism spectrum disorders. Relates informal
assessment to instructional planning in the cognitive, motor, and affective
domains throughout the life span. Prevocational and vocational planning along
with transitional issues and recreational/life skill needs are covered. Prerequisites SE 559. (3 credits)
SE 578: Communication & Language Issues in ASD
Provides an overview of
communication, typical and atypical language development across the life span,
along with specific issues in individuals with autism spectrum disorders. Interventions
for the development of language and communication are covered. Prerequisites SE 559. (3 credits)
SE 579: Behavioral & Social Issues in Students with ASD
Overview of behavioral principles, legal and theoretical
issues, purposes of behavior and interventions with students with autism
spectrum disorder. Emphasis on behavior as communication and constructive behavior
plans. Prerequisites SE 559. (3 credits)
SE 596: Collaboration & Consultation Skills in ASD
to develop collaboration and consultation skills of special education teachers and other professionals. Includes home- school interactions, family and community support
services. Emphasis is on autism spectrum disorders. Prerequisites SE 559. (3 credits)
SE 640: Lives of Adolescents & Adults with ASD
Overview of the lives of adolescents and adults with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), including emotional and physical development; gender identity; self-concept; behavioral, social and communicative challenges; transitions to adulthood; employment post-secondary and residential options. Also addresses desired personal outcomes that result in an improved quality of life. Prerequisite(s): Student must meet the prerequisites (SE 559) or have department permission. (4 credits)
SE 641: Counseling Issues in Students with Special Needs
The many sociocultural, familial, and personal influences that affect a person with disability are addressed. The course provides the student with a variety of opportunities to explore his/her own attitudes and beliefs about a person with disabilities. (4 credits)
