Physical Therapy Continuing Education Courses

Oakland University is pleased to announce significant updates to its popular E1, E2, S1 and S2 courses. Based on student feedback, the content of these courses has been reordered, refined and updated to enhance student learning.

Courses

S1 - OMPT examination and intervention for the muscles of the trunk, neck and head
September 15-16, 2012, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.
October 13-14, 2012, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.


Overview
Featuring updated content and structure, this course provides an in-depth and systematic orthopedic manual therapy approach to the examination and treatment of muscles of the trunk, neck and head. Evidence supported manual therapy specialty skills presented in this course include symptom localization, muscle play and palpation, functional massage, manual muscle stretching, self functional massage, and autostretching. Foundational sciences, clinical reasoning, orthopedic pathologies, and patient cases will also be presented and discussed.


S2 - OMPT examination and intervention for the joints of the trunk, neck and head
November 10-11, 2012, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.
December 8-9, 2012, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Evidence supported manual therapy specialty skills presented in this course include symptom localization, joint play, multidirectional translatoric joint mobilizations, and an introduction to traction manipulations. Foundational sciences, clinical reasoning, orthopedic pathologies, and patient cases will also be presented and discussed.


E1 - OMPT examination and intervention for the muscles of the upper and lower extremities
January 12-13, 2013, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.
February 9-10, 2013, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Course Content

  1. Presentation of spinal or extremity anatomy and kinesiology
  2. Presentation of spinal or extremity pathology and pathomechanics
  3. Demonstration and practice of examination skills
    1. Observation of posture and AROM
    2. Symptom localization
    3. Passive motion testing
  4. Demonstration and practice of relevant OMPT skills: S1 and E1
    1. Manual muscle stretching
    2. Functional massage
    3. Autostretching
    4. Self-functional massage
S2 and E2:
    1. Joint mobilization
    2. Joint manipulation
    3. Self-mobilization

Requirements
Participants must be licensed physical therapists.  You must fax a copy of your current PT license to (248) 364-8660.  Participants are required to actively participate in lab sessions and wear appropriate lab clothing.

Cost per course
$450 for students taking the course as Continuing Education.  Registration is only available online at oakland.edu/PACE/SHS

Refunds
Refunds will be given to students canceling a week before the start of class.  Refunds for cancellation will be subject to a $50 administrative fee. Cancellations within a week of the start of class will not be refunded.  Oakland University reserves the right to cancel this course, and students will receive a 100 percent refund in the event that this occurs.
