The Riverview Institute is host to many of the School of Nursing’s continuing education certificate programs. Riverview is one of the most technologically advanced medical training facilities in the state; located in the heart of downtown Detroit. Oakland University’s Riverview Institute was created to meet the growing demand for health care professionals through its unique program offerings. The certificate programs allow students the opportunity to begin working in entry level positions in hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living and other health care facilities. The Practical Nurse Program is provided through Continuing Education with the School of Nursing and is not a degree granting program. Therefore, financial aid (FAFSA) through Oakland University is not available. This is a non-credit, workforce development Certificate Program. Students will complete approximately 1,100 contact hours and will be eligible to sit for the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN). Successful completion of this examination qualifies the graduate for licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and the ability to practice in the State of Michigan. Graduates are also eligible to take the National Association of Practical Nurse Educational Services (NAPNES) Pharmacology Certification Examination, which affords the graduate to administer medications within various employer settings.
Course of Study
Classes are in session 2-3 days per week with clinical days 1-2 days a week (depending on the semester). Classes and clinicals will be held Tuesday-Friday. All lectures are held at the Riverview Institute location on Jefferson Avenue in downtown Detroit across from Belle Isle, at the former St. John Providence Health Systems Riverview Hospital location.

- ACT Test Score (Composite score of at least 17). Note: ACT Testing scores can be waived if you have more than 25 college credit hours, with a cummulative GPA of 2.5 or higher, or an Associate or higher level degree with a GPA of 2.0. You may schedule to take the ACT test in your local community (links are available on our website) and have your scores sent directly to Oakland University (school code #230700). You are required to take the basic ACT test only; the writing portion is note required.

Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)
About the Program
The Certified Nursing Assistant Program is offered through the Oakland University's School of Nursing-Continuing Education. This program is currently being offered at The Riverview Institute of Oakland University at one of the most technologically advanced medical training facilities in the state. This course provides basic fundamental nursing skills, and state certification as a Nursing Assistant. Wage rates for CNA's range from $12-$14 per hour.
This course will introduce the theory and techniques involved with the role of the Nurse Assistant. As a nurse assistant, you will perform the tasks given to you by the nurse. After you finish the training program, you will be able to perform the following hands-on patient care procedures with supervision in the following areas:
- Daily care including: bathing, feeding, and dressing
- Vital Sign Measurement
- ROM exercises
- Admit, transfer, and patient discharge
- Application of hot and cold treatments
- Specimen collection
- Care of the dying person
- Post surgery patients
- Care of the patient with chronic illnesses
- Safety with transferring and ambulation
Students must complete 110 hours to successfully complete this program. The course typically meets over 4 to 6 weeks in 2 hour increments.
Requirements
Students will be required to do a criminal background check, health screening including a TB Skin Test and urine drug screen.

Patient Care Technician (PCT)
About the Program
The Patient Care Technician program is offered through the Oakland University's School of Nursing (Continuing Education). This program is currently being offered at The Riverview Institute of Oakland University in the heart of downtown Detroit. This course provides the skills necessary for patient care delivery and can prepare you to work in an expanded role with registered nurses. Excellent preparation for entry into any nursing program with PCT wage rates ranging from around $14-$16 per hour.
This course will introduce the theoretical applications and techniques related to the role of the Patient Care Technician. Involving multi-skilled direct and in-direct patient care responsibilities including, but not limited to: diagnostic procedures such as 12-lead electrocardiography, phlebotomy and specimen collections. Emphasis will be placed on safety, documentation, standard precautions, legal and ethical considerations and OSHA standards. There will be a review of Nurse Assistant competencies. Application of course content will be reinforced in the supervised clinical setting.
Successful completion of training qualifies graduates to test for National Certification as a:
- Patient Care Technician
- Phlebotomist
- Certified Nursing Assistant
- EKG Technician
Course of Study
Students must complete 312 hours to successfully complete this program. The course is instructor led and meets over the course of several months. Typical course length is 6 to 6.5 hours per day and meets throughout the week (Monday through Friday).

Animal Assisted Therapy Certificate

About the Program
The use of animal assisted therapy dates back hundreds of years. Famed nurse Florence Nightingale saw the value in animal assisted therapy, as did the York Retreat in London in the 1700's to help infirm patients. Oakland University's Animal Assisted Therapy Certificate program addresses several health and social issues, including an increased need for alternative, innovative and holistic practices. Utilizing animal assisted therapy in educational, therapeutic and health care settings benefit at-risk children and adolescents, the elderly and other special-needs populations. The program is completely online with a couple of the assignments involving meeting with people in the field in your area and visiting an animal sanctuary, shelter, farm, etc.

The program includes five 8-week modules in the following areas:
- Module 1-Intro to Animal Assisted Therapy
- Module 2-Psychology of AAT
- Module 3-Special Populations and AAT
- Module 4-Working with Animals
- Module 5-Capstone Project

A Lifestyle Change to Improve Health: The Vegan Diet
About the Program
This summer, Oakland University's School of Nursing will offer the professional development course "A Lifestyle Change to Improve Health:
The Vegan Diet." The seven-week, online course will start in June and will offer a unique self-study module each week The course is not just for nurses or Oakland students. Anyone interested
in learning about this culinary alternative to improving diet and
lifestyle can register. Participants will learn how a vegan diet offers a
well-balanced approach that offers benefits beyond the prevention of
chronic illnesses that are often caused by poor choices in diet and
lifestyles.OU's School of Nursing Vegan Diet course is designed to emphasize health enhancement benefits. Veganism
is often a misunderstood lifestyle choice. While some still view it as
"new age," researchers are finding evidence that following a balanced
vegan diet boasts a host of health benefits while preventing major
diseases such as most cancers, heart disease and type II diabetes. Additional benefits include weight reduction, increased energy levels
and better health. Oakland University Instructor Marilyn Mouradjian,
MSN, RN, is a practicing vegan who has long incorporated the benefits of
the vegan diet in her nutrition courses. Those enrolled in the course will enjoy a tasty approach to a wide
variety of foods and menus that can eliminate the need for reliance on
drugs as well.
