The renowned Juilliard String Quartet will return to the Oakland University campus on Sunday, Sept. 29 as part of the Chamber Music Society of Detroit at Oakland University Series.

The concert is sponsored by Northern Trust.

The centerpiece of the program will be Beethoven’s great String Quartet in C-sharp minor, Op. 131; the program also includes an early Beethoven String Quartet, Op. 18, No. 1 in F major, and György Kurtág’s Six Moments Musicaux.

“The year 2020 marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of Ludwig van Beethoven, and his music is being celebrated around the world leading up to this occasion,” said Amy Hardison Tully, D.M.A., professor of music and director of the School of Music, Theatre and Dance at Oakland University.

“The Juilliard String Quartet will be performing two of Beethoven’s string quartets, and like his symphonies and piano sonatas, the growth of his compositional style is revealed in the two works they have programmed,” Tully added. “It will be a wonderful afternoon of chamber music.”

Tickets are $30 for adults, $25 for seniors and $10 for students. They can be purchased online at etix.com, on the Chamber Music Society’s website at CMSDetroit.org, or by calling 313-335-3300. Tickets are also available at the Varner Hall Box Office one hour prior to the performance.

“We are honored to have the Juilliard String Quartet performing on our campus,” Tully said. “The audience will notice their artistry and musicality immediately, and we are delighted to have them back on campus.”

With unparalleled artistry and enduring vigor, the Juilliard String Quartet continues to inspire audiences around the world. Founded in 1946 and hailed by The Boston Globe as “the most important American quartet in history,” the ensemble draws on a deep and vital engagement to the classics, while embracing the mission of championing new works, a vibrant combination of the familiar and the daring.

Adding to the Quartet’s celebrated discography, an album of works by Beethoven, Bartók, and Dvořák is set to be released by Sony Classical during the 2019-20 season. The Quartet’s recordings of the Bartók and Schoenberg Quartets, as well as those of Debussy, Ravel and Beethoven, have won Grammy Awards, and in 2011 the Juilliard String Quartet became the first classical music ensemble to receive a lifetime achievement award from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences.
