For a seventh year, Oakland University is holding its Summer Career Camps for 14- to 18-year-old teens at the OU Anton/Frankel Center in Mount Clemens.

The career camps are a unique pre-college experience to help motivated and ambitious college-bound teens choose a college major and future career.

Teen campers are immersed in engineering & computer science, criminal justice, business, graphic design and health care careers through hands-on skill-building activities and team exercises like:

  • building hydraulic bridges, solar cells, electrical engines and aerodynamic windmills
  • designing a prosthetic hand
  • collecting and analyzing fingerprints
  • developing a business proposal
  • creating a graphic logo
  • diagnosing a patient through laboratory testing
  • and more

Campers attend action-packed field trips and have interactive discussions with industry professionals at local companies including: Ascension Providence Rochester Hospital in Rochester, Mich.; KUKA Robotics in Shelby Township, Mich; Anderson Eckstein & Westrick in Shelby Township; Macomb County Communications and Technology Center (COMTEC) in Mount Clemens; McLaren Macomb in Mount Clemens; Public Service Institute in Clinton Township, Mich.; Honorable Judge Matthew Switalski's Circuit Court in Mount Clemens; Clinton Township Police Department and the Macomb County Sheriff’s Department in Mount Clemens.

OU’s 2019 Summer Career Camps will be held:

  • Engineering & Computer Science Camp – June 24 - 28
  • Career Exploration Camp – July 8 - 12
  • Health Care Professions Camp – July 15 – 18 *
  • Criminal Justice Camp – July 22 - 24
  • Health Care Professions Camp – Aug. 5 – 8 *

“Our Career Camps help teens who know what career they’ve chosen for their future – as well as those who may not be as sure – understand what they’ll do when they’re working in these careers and the skills they’ll need to be successful. Some teen campers discover a career they were considering doesn’t really suit them,” said DanaMarie Carreon-Glinsey, OU manager of student success & community engagement. She added, “OU staff, students and faculty answer their questions so they’re college-ready before they go – and steady once they’re there. We want them to find their life’s pursuit and change the world.”

Nearly 900 teens from public and private high schools in Macomb, Oakland, St. Clair, Wayne, Huron, Saginaw and Sanilac Counties have attended an OU career camp since 2012.

Career Camp registration is underway. For detailed camp descriptions, registration information, photo and video highlights, a financial assistance application and more, visit oakland.edu/careercamps.
