Overview

Oakland University’s School of Education & Human Services is pleased to announce the Educating African American Males workshop to be held at Oakland University in Rochester, MI.

Current research has exposed the educational inequalities and dilemmas that continue to effect African American students in today’s society; particularly, African American males. This workshop will explore the socialization of African American males and reveal biases and prejudices of educators. Workshop participants will identify factors that contribute to the achievement gap between African American males and other students and engage in reflective discourse with peers about their own attitudes, beliefs, and perceptions related to educating African American male students.

Goals of the Workshop

  • Exploring implicit bias of African American males
  • Exploring the socialization of African American males
  • Exploring the misuse of perceived authority toward African American males

Presenters
Jay Marks Dr. Jay B. Marks, School Quality Consultant at Oakland Schools

Jay B. Marks, Ph.D. is a widely-respected educator who has been in education since 1991, where he began his career as a Special Education Teacher at Northern High School with the Detroit Public School System. During his career he has served as a classroom teacher for 17 years with both Detroit and Southfield Public School Systems, as well as an educational consultant on the national level. Currently, Dr. Marks is an educational consultant with Oakland Schools (the Intermediate School District in Oakland County, Michigan) where he serves and supports the professional development needs of the 28 school districts within Oakland County. He is highly sought after for his work in the areas of Social Justice, Cultural Competence, Courageous Conversations About Race, Culturally Responsive Teaching, Educating African American Males, Closing the Achievement Gap, Student Engagement, Differentiated Instruction, and Urban Education.

His academic credentials include a B.S. degree from Western Michigan University (1990), M.A. degree from University of Detroit Mercy (1995), and an Ed. Specialist Certificate (1997) and Ph.D. (2005) in Curriculum and Instruction both from Wayne State University. As a graduate student, Dr. Marks studied abroad at Oxford University in Oxford, England as a student in their British Studies Program. Dr. Marks is an active member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., and the proud father of two beautiful daughters, Amari (12) and Jalia (9). 

 

Terrance McClain

Dr. Terrance McClain, Special Instructor and Coordinator of School Counseling Program, Department of Counseling, Oakland University

Terrance R. McClain, Ph.D. began his career at Oakland University in 2009 where he served as a Lecturer, Visiting Assistant Professor and is currently a Special Instructor/Coordinator of the School Counseling Program.  He has presented at national, regional and on-campus conferences, and co-authored a chapter in the textbook, Workforce Diversity: Current and Emerging Issues and Cases. He is a member of numerous professional organizations, licensed as a professional counselor and a school guidance counselor and has been nominated for a Teacher Excellence Award at Oakland University. Dr. McClain’s 40 years of experience working with African American teens through his ministry and in community outreach in Florida, Georgia, Ohio and Michigan motivated him to want to find a way to help black male youths to overcome whatever barriers are holding them back from academic success.
