Early Childhood Education and Certification

ZS Endorsement

In the summer of 2011, the State of Michigan passed several school and tenure reform bills. The Michigan Department of Education then created new administrative rules to comply with these new laws.

One of the outcomes of these efforts was replacing the ZA (early childhood general education) endorsement with the newer, more inclusive ZS (early childhood general and special education) endorsement, enabling early childhood educators to not only recognize developmental delays in young children, but to address them using a variety of evidence-based practices.

Oakland University’s Early Childhood ZS (General and Special Education) endorsement program allows Michigan teachers with elementary certification to meet state requirements for approval to teach in:

1) General education early childhood classrooms,
2) Inclusive early childhood classrooms, and in
3) Early childhood special education classrooms

ZA-ZS Endorsement Option

Perhaps you - or someone you know - would like to upgrade their previously-earned ZA endorsement to comply with these updated standards? All it takes is two graduate courses (one in fall and one in winter), and attaining a passing score on the related MTTC test! Course information, application packets and course descriptions can be found at: https://wwwp.oakland.edu/ops/professional-development/individual-courses-for-credit/.

The next 2-course sequence will begin in winter, 2017, and finish with the second course the following fall term. Tuition scholarships may also be available.

More information about the new administrative rules regarding the Early Childhood ZS (General and Special Education) endorsement can be accessed here.

M.Ed. in Early Childhood Education with ZS Endorsement

The Master of Education in Early Childhood Education prepares professionals to work with children from birth through age 8 in public and private schools and agency settings. It provides training for the direction and evaluation of early childhood programs and the coordination of community resources for young children and families. The program combines theory with observation and participation in clinical, community and school practicum settings, and is offered on campus in Rochester. (Some courses are offered in hybrid format.)

Teachers interested in obtaining their Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education or those wishing to obtain the ZS endorsement can find information on Oakland University’s early childhood education programs at https://wwwp.oakland.edu/ops/degrees/ece/.
