Why Teach?

Why Teach?

Choosing teaching as a profession is both bold and inspiring. Every day in their classrooms, teachers not only teach, but they lead, inspire, and mentor their students every day. Oakland University offers both undergraduate and graduate teacher education programs in elementary and secondary education. Elementary education teachers are certified to teach grades K-8, while secondary education teachers are certified in their major/minor areas, grades 6-12.

Oakland University is trying to change the conversation about teaching with a campaign called Why Teach? The university is asking teachers across the region to answer that question with a short statement. Roberta Rea, the Director of Education Advising for the School of Education & Human Services, shared some of the responses the university has received so far:

  • "Teaching is an opportunity to enrich lives that not many other professionals have."
  • "I teach because every kid matters!"
  • "I teach so every student, no matter their ability, can discover their potential."
  • "I teach because it is in my heart."
  • "There is nothing better than watching children grow and knowing you helped that happen."

Oakland University education students were also challenged to create a short video to answer the question: "Why did you choose the School of Education and Human Services at Oakland University?" Timothy Osebold's video entry won first place. The contest was sponsored by the Oakland University Credit Union during the winter 2015 semester.
