Seminar to offer inventors an inside look on the patenting process

     Sterling Heights, Mich. – In celebration of the new patent office Detroit location, "Get Out of the Garage: Patent Your Idea!" will be presented on Tuesday, April 2, by the Macomb-OU INCubator, the City of Sterling Heights Economic Development and Macomb County Planning and Economic Development – jointly described as Velocity.

     The U.S. government grants patents to inventors, giving them exclusive rights to manufacture, use or sell their ideas and protect their creations from the exploitation of others. Attendees of this seminar will learn:
  • whether their ideas are worthy of patents;
  • at what point they should take steps to protect them; and
  • about services are available to help them through the patenting process.
     Featured speakers include Ram Shukla, resource supervisory patent examiner at the Elijah J. McCoy Detroit Satellite Office of the USPTO; Thomas D. Helmholdt, patent attorney, counselor at law and supervisor at the Wayne State University Patent Procurement Law Clinic; Gunther J. Evanina, an attorney specializing in patent law with Butzel Long; and John Swiatek, president and CEO of Coliant Corporation and inventor of Powerlet.

     The seminar, set for 3-5 p.m. at the Velocity Collaboration Center, is free and open to the public. The Velocity building is located at 6633 Eighteen Mile Road in Sterling Heights.
