In this newsletter, you can learn about how OU INC is growing its services to help those companies that are growing and those preparing to grow.  We also talk about some successes of clients and past employees to see how they have grown.

SCIENTEL Repeats, SET Inc. Joins In Prestigious Honor
At this year's Corp! Magazine DiSciTech awards two OU INC clients earned themselves the honor of taking home awards in the Technology category. This is the second consecutive year in which two OU INC clients have received awards. The first year combination of Scientel and Cure Launcher and the second year combination of Sustainable Environmental Technologies and Scientel, continue to showcase amazing innovation and advancement. For Scientel, this is their second year in a row winning this great award. For Sustainable Environmental Technologies (SET) this is their first year. Each of these two companies had something innovative and significant that helped them stand out from their competition.

OU INC Workshop Series Begins
 
Financing To Grow





OU INC hosted the first workshop in its Growing Your Business, Tools for Success Workshop Series on Thursday, April 17. Topic 1 in our workshop series was Financing to Grow-Understand the Landscape and was presented by Mike Brennan-Business Commercialization and Capital Investment Advisor for OU INC.

During the event, Mr. Brennan covered many crucial keys to understand when financing a business such as various capital sources, how to properly position your company to be qualified for private funding, including private equity, the angel network and venture capital, and/or public financing, including grants, pre-seed, micro-loans, and venture match.

Navigating The Art Of Negotiation

On Thursday, May 15 OU INC hosted the second event in our workshop series: Navigating The Art Of Negotiation. Taught by legal expert Mike Sugameli, the workshop was designed to help attendees to grow their negotiation skills in both personal and business situations. Sugameli is a principal in the firm of Sugameli and Sugameli, P.L.C. and is also a Management instructor at Oakland University. Understanding how to negotiate is beneficial in everyday business (contracts with customers, patents, negotiations with funders and in personal life (registering for classes, purchasing a car, scheduling dr. appointments).

Having extensive experience in negotiating, Mr. Sugameli pointed out several factors to watch for in negotiations that can dynamically change the outcome. While there are several tactics that individuals can deploy, there are also other factors to consider that can give great detail into what the other side is thinking.

STEM Camp Registration Underway
                   

Oakland University's School of Engineering and Computer Science is ongoing its registration for the summer 2014 STEM camps. Oakland University's School of Engineering and Computer Science (SECS) offers camps to students from upper elementary school through high school. Students with an interested in Science, Technology, Engineering, and/or Mathematics (STEM) are encouraged to enroll.

In these camps, students will be taken through a series of hands-on, student-centered experiences where they will learn a little bit about what each of the engineering fields do, build and test equipment and conduct experiments in the various disciplines.

OU Economists Release SE Michigan Economic Outlook Report

Michigan's economic state has started to see some turn around over the past few years, even while the city of Detroit is still trying to resolve their financial issues, experts are more than optimistic about the economic outlook for Southeastern Michigan. A quarterly report done by OU business school professors Dr. Silberman and Dr. Tracy show that businesses and consumers are also optimistic about the economic outlook.

Three separate surveys were conducted-consumers, business executives, and experts-regarding the SE Michigan Economic Outlook. Input was provided by 400 consumers, 80 business executives, and 12 experts. Local experts included representatives from UM-Flint, MSU, Wayne State, OU, and the Kellogg Institute.

MVCA Releases 2013 Research Report

The Michigan Venture Capital Association released their 2013 research report this week. The report is an in-depth analysis of venture capital in the state. The report shows continued growth and development in Michigan's entrepreneurial economy.

MVCA is a non-profit organization whose goal is to grow and sustain a vibrant venture capital community in Michigan. Their reports provide valuable insight into Michigan's entrepreneurial economy. One of the highlights from this reports shows that $120 million was invested in 40 companies in Michigan, the highest number of deals since the MVCA began tracking this information and this is an increase of 111 percent over the last five years.

 Amy Butler Joins Board Of EIBC
Amy Butler, Executive Director of OU INC, was elected to the board of directors of the Michigan Energy Innovation Business Council at the group's annual meeting on April 30th at the Kellogg Center. Butler's term is for three years.

As Michigan's only trade association focused on the advanced energy sector, membership in the Energy Innovation Business Council provides companies with a voice in the Lansing and Washington policy discussions, insider industry news and information, access to capital and information on grants and other funding, business development assistance, and outstanding networking opportunities.

The Next Star On The International Stage
   

Oakland University Alumni Jibran Ahmed grew up in the Metro-Detroit area his whole life. A natural born leader, Ahmed held numerous leadership positions at Oakland University including Student Body Vice President. Having obtained his Bachelor of Arts and Science degree majoring in International Relations with a minor in Theater, Ahmed is now pursuing a Masters of International Development degree majoring in Human Security.

Ahmed's role here at OU INC was to research and compile a list of services made available to help international companies establish a presence in Michigan. Placed in charge of compiling research and putting together an application that will be submitted to the NBIA (National Business Incubation Association) seeking OU INC as a soft landing zone for international companies, Ahmed's task held great significance. Being designated as a soft landing zone for international companies would be a tremendous accomplishment for OU INC and for the university.

Building Blocks For A Successful Future
Oakland University attracts some of the most intriguing and inspired students to its campus every year. While attending OU, Jarett Burch worked at OU INC. Having been involved in several different aspects of campus life, Burch says that his internship at OU INC was of the highest value to him and was a significant factor in getting his current job.

Growing up, Burch lived all over the country including Maryland, Virginia, and Michigan. In his free time, Burch likes to ride sport bikes and considers himself a "gearhead". Having lived on a horse farm previously, his internship here at OU INC brought back some fond memories. While attending OU, Burch joined the Technology and Leadership Keys Student Organization.
