Later this month, you will receive a packet of information explaining the benefits and including the necessary enrollment forms. Please take the time to review this important information before open enrollment  begins.

Benefit Changes Coming for 2011 Due to Health Care Reform
As you have no doubt heard through the media, there are a number of changes coming to our benefit plans as a result of health care reform. Specifics of the changes will be included in your Open Enrollment materials. Here is a brief summary:
  • Employees will be allowed to cover their children until they reach 26 under our medical, dental and vision plans. Dependent eligibility is no longer limited by financial dependency, marital status or enrolling in school. Children are not eligible for coverage if they are eligible for coverage through their own employer.
  • Annual and lifetime dollar limits will be removed on "essential benefits" such as hospitalization, organ transplants, mental health/substance abuse and preventive services.
  • Significant changes to the Health Care Reimbursement Account , including over-the-counter reimbursements, will be explained in detail in your open enrollment materials.
Contact the Benefits Department at x4207 with any questions about your 2011 Benefits.

Forms Available Online

Online forms are a paperless solution to submitting and routing forms within Oakland University's community. Forms are completed online and when submitted, an email is sent to notify an individual that action is required by them. Routing instructions are displayed on the form to aid in the appropriate electronic approval process and expedite the processing of the request. All transactions that are being done on the paper form can now be done using the online form.

Oakland University has several solutions to moving your paper processes online. See which one best fits your needs by visiting the Online Form Comparison Grid at

Banner Online Training modules under review
UHR is currently reviewing a series of online training courses from Sungard's Banner Digital Library. Courses include instruction on the Student, Financial Aid, Finance and Human Resources modules. If you are interested in participating in this review, and would be willing to fill out an evaluation form afterward, please contact Dana Pierce at to set up an appointment. Your feedback will help us determine whether this training tool would benefit our campus.

Banner Resource Web on PortAdm - Access Extraction Databases
In addition to Banner module documentation, the Banner Resource Web on PortAdm ( - Banner Training Resources) has several existing databases available for use to extract data from Banner. These existing databases make it very easy to get up-to-date information about students, course offerings, enrollments, graduation information, room information, grading activity and much more. There are also several "helpful hint" type documents that provide information on how to set up your computer to work with Banner and MS Access (ODBC connection), job aids for student modules, documentation on how to perform functions in MS Access (Append queries, Crosstab queries), using Banner "canned" views and finding the right fields to use when building specific databases.

Speaking of Microsoft Access...

The Access Users Group consists of OU employees meeting and sharing information on data extraction. The first meeting of the year will be on October 6th, 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 430 KL. We will be discussing the many training resources available on PortAdm as well as viewing and discussing some of the many pre-made databases that are available that can be used to make your jobs easier while getting the information you need.

Employees can sign up for the meetings by going to the Access Users Group enrollment page:

Online Learning
Advanced Document Features in Word 2007
This SkillSoft course is a good tool in helping you customize the Microsoft Word 2007 interface.  It also teaches you to use macros and master documents. I would recommend this tool to those who have used macros before or have some knowledge of macros. I didn't have a previous understanding of the topic and had some difficulty understanding. The quick access tool bar shows you how to insert items you regularly go to and helps you save time. You can't add everything but you can add certain items to help you out. I didn't know you could change the quick access tool bar to what you want to see and that was very helpful.

The master document was very interesting and something I had to play around with as I was following the Skillsoft course. I learned a lot of new things with this feature and plan on using this feature down the road. You learn how to use, manage and modify your master document.

I would recommend Advanced Document Features in Word 2007 to all employees that want to expand their knowledge of Word 2007.
