Eye Research Institute
ERI researcher Frank Giblin’s $2 million grant from the National Eye Institute was covered in the Oakland Press and the Royal Oak Daily Tribune.

Robotics
The IGVC robotics competition, held at OU, was previewed in Detroit Auto Scene. It was also covered in detail by the paper later in June.

Community Engagement
Hispanic Outreach
La Jornada, a Spanish-language newspaper in Detroit, published an extensive article on OU's Hispanic Outreach program led by Professor Peter Binkert.
Faculty and Staff Engagement

State Budget
Editorials by President Gary Russi discouraging separate state appropriations bills for Michigan’s universities appeared in the Detroit News and Oakland Press.

Vice President for Finance and Administration John Beaghan was quoted in a front-page Oakland Press article and a front-page Observer-Eccentric article about budget cuts and delayed payments from the State of Michigan. He was also quoted in the Oakland Business Review.

Technology
Terrie Rowe, assistant vice president for university technology services, was quoted in the Chronicle of Higher Education about the pros and cons of large IT departments.

Gas Prices
Professor of Economics Kevin Murphy was quoted in an Oakland Press article about rising gas prices.

Boosting Enrollment

New Degree Programs
The five new degree programs approved by the Board of Trustees in June were noted in the Oakland Press and Rochester Post. The two technology-focused ones were announced in the Great Lakes IT Report.

Graduate Open House
The Detroit News, Free Press and Observer-Eccentric announced a graduate open house at which the application fee was waived.

Digital Games Workshop
A Professional Development workshop featuring Mark Prensky on how to engage today’s learners with digital games was previewed in the Free Press, Oakland Press and Great Lakes IT Report.

AP Institutes
The AP Summer Institutes were covered in the Rochester Post.

Nursing Conference
The Envision nursing conference was previewed in the Great Lakes IT Report.

Student and Alumni Accomplishments

Lansing Activism
OU students traveled to Lansing to protest the lack of higher-ed funding provided by the state. Their story was reported in the Oakland Press.

Aida De la Cruz
Student Aida De la Cruz was featured in a Suburban Lifestyles article about her role in Michigan Opera Theatre’s Romeo and Juliet.

Jeri Manning
Alumna Jeri Manning will teach English in Morocco beginning August 15. She was profiled in a Suburban Lifestyles article, which noted how she was inspired to begin her career path after taking a linguistics course at OU.

Eli Janosko
Alumna Eli Janosko performs and teaches guitar. She was profiled in the Oakland Press.
