Highlights of the Winter Performance Schedule

As ever, we have a schedule packed with music, theatre and dance performances by our students, faculty and guests. You can get full details of all the events in our season brochure, on our online calendar, and now on our new Web landing page at oakland.edu/mtd. We hope you enjoy our new online performance schedule page, which is designed to be more user friendly than the old calendar format. Let us know what you think!
Here are just some January and February highlights. On Thursday, January 16 at 7:30 p.m. we will host guest performer Avner the Eccentric in his show "Exceptions to Gravity," which we expect to delight and mystify the audience. Get more details here.  Our artist-in-residence, Regina Carter, will be on campus to perform on Saturday, January 18 at 8 p.m. This year she will share the stage with both the Oakland Jazz Quartet and the Oakland University Chamber Orchestra in a night of jazz with an orchestral hue. More details of this event here.    Right: Regina Carter

A Life in Music: Daniel Walshaw

At the recent funeral of Nelson Mandela, the music was provided by South Africa's premier symphony orchestra, the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic. The hymns and traditional South African music were heard around the world as people everywhere paused to pay tribute to the passing of a great man. As we watched online or on television, most members of our Music, Theatre and Dance community were unaware that an OU alumnus was involved in that historic event.
Daniel Walshaw (B.M. '06) is the artistic administrator of the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic, which is based in Durban. He lives just north of the city with his wife Joanna Frankel, who is the concertmaster of the orchestra. Daniel said, "We have a beautiful beachfront apartment in the quiet town of Umdloti Beach."  Daniel's work with the orchestra includes planning repertoire, the selection of soloists and conductors, and some conducting. He is also the new music coordinator (running the South African New Music Initiative) and head of the library.             Right: Daniel Walshaw

January News

Recently our voice students were privileged, not only to attend the Michigan Opera Theatre's production of La Traviata, but also to take part in a master class with soprano Nicole Cabell, who was in town to play Violetta. Christine Divito, a music education graduate student who attended the master class, said, "Ms. Cabell worked with some of our best singers and was able to help each one of them improve . . . She worked a lot on forward placement, which really helped me personally. She was also very kind and encouraging with each student and she gave incredible insights into her life as an opera singer, what is expected and how to prepare."
Nicolette Book, who will graduate from the voice program this spring, is excited that she will have the opportunity to spend the summer with the Wolf Trap Opera Company in Vienna, Virginia. She has won a position in the highly competitive Wolf Trap Opera Studio, which means she will appear in small main stage roles.     Right: Nicolette Book
