Hope, diversification key to manufacturing's future

Despite the bad press, manufacturing is alive and well in Michigan.

Mohan Tanniru, dean, OU's School of Business Administration, and Joe Petrosky, dean, engineering and advanced technology, Macomb Community College, joined State Representative Kim Meltzer on her show -- On Message with Meltzer -- to discuss manufacturing jobs in the 21st century.

Touching on the key themes of hope and diversification, the trio talked about how educational institutions, government, the private sector, students -- from kindergarten through university level -- and displaced workers form foundation for the future of the manufacturing industry.

Business leader encourages students to create their own opportunities for successful future

Noted business leader Jerry York shared his views of the economic future with more than 120 SBA accounting and finance students during a Beta Alpha Psi meeting last week.

The chairman, president and CEO of Harwinton Capital, and chief aide to Kirk Kerkorian, discussed the state of the U.S. economy, capital markets, the Washington Agenda and long-term perspectives. He then turned the conversation to what it all means to the students in the audience.

His remarks were a cold dose of reality. With jobs continuing to move overseas, he indicated future job prospects are grim. “Creating one’s own opportunity is necessary,” he said.

Hard work, dedication honors scholarship supporters

With the support and encouragement of SBA alumni, friends and business partners behind them, SBA scholarship recipients work diligently to do their best work in the classroom, in internships and in the community to honor and thank supporters for making their college education possible.

By alleviating some of the financial burden that accompanies a college education, scholarships provide students the chance to focus on their academics and participate in valuable experiential learning activities, all which build the skills that allow them to gain employment and contribute the community throughout their life.

One SBA student who has received several scholarships over the course of her SBA education, Kaja Mitevska, a senior marketing major, thanked SBA alumni and friends during her remarks at the SBA 40th Anniversary Dinner Celebration, in October.

U.S. and Canadian tooling companies have long been operating in an economic environment rife with disappearing credit lines, protectionist foreign competitors, aloof lawmakers and abundant regulations. We’re a nation obsessed with shortcuts and sensationalism—often our own worst enemy. Because of high taxes and rising energy and regulatory costs, U.S. manufacturers face a 17.6-percent structural cost disadvantage when competing against nine other leading industrial nations, including China, Germany, Japan and Mexico (according to a 2008 report by The Manufacturing Institute and the Manufacturer's Alliance/MAPI).

Just a stone’s throw away from Chrysler’s Auburn Hills World Headquarters, Oakland University houses the Center for Integrative Business Research and Education (CIBRE). CIBRE kicked off its 2009 program with a forum on May 14, 2009, titled “Preservation and Prosperity of the U.S. Tool & Die Industry.”
