Research professor shines national spotlight on SBA

Through extensive research into vehicle energy management, SBA Research Professor Walter McManus is widely recognized for his leadership and expertise in the behavioral aspects of energy transportation. McManus recently collaborated with frequent research partners Alan Baum and Dan Meszler on the report “Fuel Economy Focus: Perspectives on 2020 Industry Implications,” which predicts the U.S. auto industry overall would see a 5.3% ($4.7 billion) increase in profits in 2020 if the new proposed fuel-economy and emissions standards take effect. It also notes the Detroit Three are likely to realize the greatest profit boost.
Lecture series helps graduate students “Bulletproof” their success

SBA graduate students can take advantage of a unique opportunity this year to develop a cache of practical tools that can help them navigate the challenges of today’s business world. As sponsor of the 2012 Bulletproof Your Success business lecture series, the SBA designated 10 complimentary registrations and lunches per lecture for graduate students, available on a first-come, first-serve basis. The Bulletproof Your Success series is being presented by Camille Jayne, President and CEO of The Community House in Birmingham. Sessions began in February and continue the second Wednesday of the month through September, 11:30 a.m. -1 p.m.

The challenge: How to handle a business operation whose profits are inconsistent with an organization’s strategic direction. Three teams of SBA Scholars were asked to address this seemingly unusual business dilemma as part of the MSU-Federal Credit Union Scholars Case Competition in February. The case introduced competitors to credit unions as a form of cooperative economic entities while facilitating a discussion about organizations where shareholders are customers.

Members of the SBA Scholars will compete in the PNC Scholars Case Competition at noon, Saturday, March 3, in 237 Elliott Hall. In the final Case Competition of the year, three teams of SBA Scholars will be presented a dilemma a business leader may encounter. Working under deadlines, each will analyze the situation and use their business knowledge to develop a recommendation, then present it to the judges. The members of the winning team will be awarded with a small prize.
