Friday, December 30, 2011 - OU Researchers End 2011 With New Advances
Three research groups close out 2011 with publications advancing their field.

Distinguished Professor and CBR member Michael Sevilla, of the Department of Chemistry, published “Radicals Formed in N-Acetylproline by Electron Attachment: Electron Spin Resonance Spectroscopy and Computational Studies” in the Journal of Physical Chemistry B (Volume 115, Pages 14846-14851, 2011). Lead author is former undergraduate Chemistry major Jeanette Kheir, who was supported by a Thompson Undergraduate Research Award, established by Ronald and Janet Bennett. Sevilla’s laboratory is funded by a grant from the National Institutes of Health.

Professor and CBR member Xiangqun Zeng, of the Department of Chemistry, published a paper about the “Immobilization of a Human Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor 2 Mimotope-Derived Synthetic Peptide on Au and Its Potential Application for Detection of Herceptin in Human Serum by Quartz Crystal Microbalance,” in the journal Analytical Chemistry (Volume 83, Pages 8928-8936, 2011). First author is Yuqin Shang, a graduate student in the Biomedical Sciences: Health and Enviromental Chemistry PhD program. Zeng’s research is supported by an OU-Beaumont Multidisciplinary Research Award and by a grant from the National Institutes of Health.

Eugene Surdutovich, of the Department of Physics, and his coworkers published another of their series of papers about the interaction of high-energy ions with biological tissue. Their article “Calculation of Complex DNA Damage Induced by Ions” appeared in Physical Review E (Volume 84, Article Number 051918, 2011). Coauthor on the paper is undergraduate Physics major David Gallagher.

These accomplishments indicate that biomedical research and education is robust and growing at Oakland University. The new year promises additional advances.
