Diversity and Inclusion Home

Welcome from Assistant Dean for Diversity and Inclusion Vonda K. Douglas-Nikitin, M.D.

It is my honor and privilege to welcome you to Diversity and Inclusion at the Oakland University William Beaumont (OUWB) School of Medicine.

At OUWB, we are strongly committed to creating and sustaining a culture that embraces and celebrates the multiple dimensions of diversity. We believe in the fundamental importance of creating an environment that nurtures all individuals in their ability to achieve their full potential.

While diversity is an important feature of this environment, we believe that culture drives individual and collective excellence. A culture of intentional inclusion creates the environment in which diversity can thrive.

OUWB Founding Dean Dr. Robert Folberg leads this effort and referred to it when he said the following: “We understand the opportunity: it is easier to create a new culture than to change an existing culture. Our school brings many innovations to medical education. We consider our culture to be our most significant innovation.”

At OUWB, our culture is intentionally designed to promote respectful, innovative exchanges between students, staff and faculty. It nurtures analytical reflection and compassionate, ethical decision-making as a means to demonstrate and develop cultural competency and address health-care disparities. We are devoted to recruiting, training, promoting and retaining the best individuals to deliver high-quality medical care to an increasingly diverse patient population and as part of an increasingly diverse work force.

It is our goal in Diversity and Inclusion to serve as a central resource in achieving the OUWB mission, vision and values in which diversity serves as a central driver of excellence in medical education and service to the community.

We invite you to explore our website and join with us as we strive to make OUWB a place of choice – for students, faculty, staff and the community as a whole.

An Inclusive Medical Learning Community

The Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine facilitates and promotes its diverse and inclusive medical learning community through pipeline programs, student support and interest groups, educational programs and community outreach events.

We are mindful of our mission to serve our community by addressing health care disparities locally and nationally.

In our Diversity & Inclusion logo, the capital letter "I" links Diversity and Inclusion to remind us that everyone at Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine is responsible for sustaining and promoting our culture.

Everyone should believe that I - I personally - am responsible for a culture that values diversity as a strategy for achieving excellence and culture that embraces everyone in our medical school community.
