Welcome to the Linguistics Department and the ESL Center

The Linguistics Department offers programs leading to Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees in linguistics. A background in linguistics prepares individuals for a wide variety of careers. Currently, the fastest-growing area is technology, where linguists work on speech recognition, natural language processing, information retrieval, and a variety of web-based projects. Linguistics graduates may go on to jobs in education, business, government, and publishing. Our programs also provide excellent preparation for graduate work in the professional fields (business, medicine, and law) as well as, of course, for a career in academia. The English as a Second Language Center at Oakland University was established in 1999 within the Department of Linguistics. The ESL Center has provided English as a second language instruction to hundreds of students from around the world, representing more than 50 countries. All instructors within the Linguistics/ESL Department have at least a masters degree and combined teaching experience of over 80 years in teaching English language learners. Currently, classes are offered on the campus of Oakland University every semester, and online classes are being developed to be offered during both Summer I and II semesters.
