OU Students Pitch a Home Run!

This summer, students in Holly Gilbert and Kim Madeleine’s special topics course, JRN 480: OU Branding, had the opportunity to work on an important project. The students were tasked with researching, creating and pitching a branding campaign for the University to President Gary Russi and his council. The campaign included, among other things, a video for OU, shot and edited by Jason Willis. The team also pitched a marketing campaign, positioning statement, tagline and strategy. The students competed against a local public relations firm and another firm from New York. Dr. Jennifer Heisler, Chair of the Department of Communication and Journalism, stated, "I can't tell you how wonderfully they performed. Their ideas were clear, well articulated and spot on!" The department commends the students and Profs. Gilbert and Madeleine for taking on such an important task and performing so admirably with seasoned industry professionals.

Dr. Schneeweis Publishes Article on the Romanian Roma in Critical Public Health

Dr. Adina Schneeweis, Assistant Professor of Journalism in the Department of Communication and Journalism, authored the article, "Constructing the Roma Audience: Public Health Communication and Intervention in Contemporary Romania" which appears in the 2011 edition of the peer reviewed Critical Public Health. The study investigates health promotion materials targeting a group historically conceived as problematic, the Romanian Roma. In the article, Dr. Schneeweis examines how recent campaigns of interventions, funded by the United States and Western non-profits, understand their audience and how such constructions relate to larger political dynamics in Europe. Focusing on how practitioners conceptualized the Roma audience, as entities to be communicated with and about, in order to affect their behavior, the study provides insight regarding health communication as a political endeavor, as well as current institutionalization of cultural and ethnic differences in Romania. The analysis revealed cause for concern and also evidence of progressive thinking.
