Garry J. Gilbert, a print and radio reporter and editor for more than 30 years, is the director of the journalism program at Oakland University.
A student of the history of American journalism, Garry has B.A. and M.A. degrees from Oakland University. His master’s thesis examined the emergence of conservative newspaper columnists during the 1930s and their coverage of the politics of the Great Depression and the New Deal.
He was executive editor of The Oakland Press, a daily newspaper in Pontiac, Mich., for eight years. He joined the faculty at Michigan State University in 2006 as a visiting editor and lecturer and returned to OU in a full-time capacity in 2007.
During his tenure as executive editor of The Oakland Press, it earned designation six times as Michigan’s best newspaper in its circulation category. The Michigan Press Association awarded The Press the prestigious Public Service Award for reporting in 2002.
In 1999, he directed the establishment of a $50,000 Oakland Press Endowed Scholarship for Journalism Excellence at his alma mater. He was named winner of the university’s Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award in 2000.
Garry is married to Holly Shreve Gilbert, who received her M.A. from Oakland in 2005. Holly is an adjunct instructor of journalism at OU. They live with their 17-year-old son Jackson, a freshman at OU, in Rochester Hills. Garry is also the father of Dan Strawser and Christina Gilbert Pustulka and grandfather of Ava and Lucas.
Garry serves on the boards of the OU Alumni Association and the OU student newspaper. He is a past president of the Michigan Associated Press Editors Association and a former board member of the Birmingham Unitarian Church.
