There will also be links to information about gigs, clinics, guest artists, and community activities. For current students, this is the place to find information about classes, auditions, and rehearsal schedules. Also, please feel free to contact us if you have questions.
The Oakland University Jazz Program provides many opportunities for students. Our Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Combos, and Contemporary Music Ensemble perform around the Metro Detroit area, and have featured such guest artists as Regina Carter and Doc Holladay. OU offers jazz classes in Jazz Theory, Jazz History and Analysis, and Arranging. Exciting new additions to the program are coming soon, so please keep checking the website for more details.

Meet Professor Miles Brown
Bassist, composer, performer, and teacher Miles Brown is a versatile musician who has earned bachelor and doctorate (forthcoming) degrees from the Eastman School of Music in jazz performance studies as well as a master’s degree from the Mannes College of Music in classical bass performance. As a jazz performer, Miles has led groups featured at the Syracuse Jazz Festival, the Rochester International Jazz Festival, the JVC Jazz Festival, and the Blue Note. He has played with jazz masters such as Sam Rivers, Joe Magnarelli, Ralph Alessi, Walt Weiskopf, Harold Danko, Bill Dobbins, Joe Lovano, Ben Monder, and Kenny Werner; and he has recorded on the Native Language, Leading Tone, and Yummy House labels.

Two full days of activities including combo rehearsals, listening classes, world percussion sessions, and more. Non-traditional jazz instruments are welcome. The first two days will culminate in an informal combo concert for participants, and the second in a free combo concert open to the public.

Carl Cafagna is a professional vocalist and instrumentalist in Metro Detroit, active as a saxophonist, drummer, clarinetist, flutist and vocalist. Carl has performed and/or recorded with the late Mel Torme, Natalie Cole, Marcus Belgrave, Richie Cole, Jon Hendricks, the Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey Orchestras, Kenny Burrell, Dave Liebman, John Clayton, Sunny Wilkenson, Paul Keller and Hot Club of Detroit, just to name a few. Hello all:
Below you'll find the audition material for next semester's Jazz Band.
To audition for the Jazz Band, you must:
1. Play the tune "Hot House" listed below, or another bebop-ish head of your choice.
2. Sight read.
3. Improvise on a blues. (Optional.)
The audition days are:
Tuesday, January 3rd, 1-5pm
Wednesday, January 4th, 1-5pm
There will be a sign-up sheet on the Jazz bulletin board
outside my office, 313 Varner Hall. This is also where the auditions
take place.
