Multimedia Report in Spain

JRN Special Topics 4800 Multimedia Reporting in Spain is a four-week international reporting program designed to help students prepare for a career in international reporting by teaching a range of news-gathering skills and offering students the opportunity to practice the craft of research and journalism in a foreign land. The research, reporting and writing will center on the migrant issue, where Middle Eastern, Northern African and Sub-Saharan African refugees are fleeing their homes in hopes of resettling in safer countries in Europe. The program runs Summer II from July 1 - Aug 21 with the travel portion from July 14 - August 17, 2019.

For more information, contact: Cathy Shafran, Dept. of Journalism at shafran@oakland.edu.

Where You
Will Be

Informational meetings about travel will be held in the months leading up to the program.

Prior to travel, students will begin research on the historical background of Spain's refugee crisis as well as learn journalistic skills for the trip.

With this knowledge in hand students will travel together as a group to Malaga, Spain.

Students will live near and study on the campus of Marbella International University Centre in suburban Marbella - just south of Malaga. Student will travel from campus on organized excursions to refugee camps and NGO (non-governmental organization) offices along Spain's southern border. There will be a two-day excursion from Marbella to the nation's capital in Madrid where students will engage in interview sessions and press briefings with Spain's political leaders. Shared hotel rooms will be arranged for students in Madrid. Train travel will be organized for students for multiple-day excursions to the north. Bus travel will be arranged for excursions to the south.

What You
Will Do
and learn

Students will study journalism reporting and multimedia reporting skills including podcasting, web and social media video news, as well as TV reporting and news website design.

During the 4-week period abroad, students will meet with and interview local residents, North African refugees, representatives of non-governmental agencies running refugee camps, and politicians making decisions about their future. These interview opportunities will be made available through the entire study abroad. Students will gather interviews and do research during the first three weeks abroad. The fourth week of the program will be devoted to writing and editing stories and publishing them on the students’ news website:  OUrefugeereport.com.
What To
Bring

Clothing: A detailed clothing list will be provided. In general, students should bring clothing for very warm weather. Casual wear is fine for the classroom, beach wear is fine for weekends, but students should also bring some professional/modest clothing on excursions. Further details will be provided on how to pack.

Equipment: Specifics of equipment will be provided at a later date, but students will be asked to bring personal electronics such as a laptop, smartphone, lightweight tripod and a pocket-sized audio recorder.

JRN 200 or equivalent introductory journalism is recommended with a grade of 3.0 or higher.

Without this prerequisite, preference will be given to students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher in courses related to journalism, communication, political science, human rights or international relations. Students with a lower GPA will be considered with a letter of recommendation from an instructor.
