How to Setup Email on iPhone

Please note the easiest and most consistent way to access Webmail powered by Google for either Webmail or Calendar on the iPad and/or iPhone is to access https://webmail.oakland.edu using the Safari browser on the iPhone.

If you want to use the e-mail app on the iPhone, use the following instructions.

The first step is to log in Webmail powered by Google to enable IMAP (or POP) settings at webmail

  1. Enter NetID Username (without the "@oakland.edu")
  2. Enter NetID Password

Setting Up IMAP/POP Account

  1. While logged into webmail, click on the gear in the upper-right corner and select "Mail Settings."

  2. Select the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab
  3. Click Enable IMAP or Enable POP for all mail, depending on your preference
  4. Click Save Changes

Next click Sync to synchronize your password (Click on the word SYNC to complete and submit the form).

  1. Enter NetID account
  2. Enter NetID Password
  3. Click Submit

Password Requirements

  • Password MUST be 8 - 15 alphanumeric characters to perform the synchronization process.

  • It must have at least one number and one alphabet.
  • It cannot be the same as your two previous passwords.

Account unlock service - Unlock Captcha at https://www.google.com/accounts/UnlockCaptcha

  1. Enter entire NetID account ( Username@oakland.edu )

  2. Enter your NetID password
  3. Click Submit

iPhone Setup:

  1. Click the Settings icon
  2. Select Mail, Contacts, Calendars
  3. Select Add Account
  4. Select Gmail
  5. Enter account information

Set up your new email client account

  1. Enter Name: ie. John Smith

  2. Email Address: Complete NetID account name ie. Smith12345@oakland.edu

  3. Password: NetID password
  4. Description: ie. Oakland

  5. NEXT button...Looking up account

  6. Make sure Mail is turned on. You will also have the option to sync you calendar and notes.
  7. Press save

Manual Set Up Steps

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Go to Mail, Contacts, Calendar.
  3. Select Add Account.
  4. Select Google
  5. Select Add Mail Account.
  6. Put in information: Name, Complete Oakland Email (username@oakland.edu), NetID Password, and Description (ie."Oakland")
  7. Select Next
  8. ...Verifying

  9. SAVE

Your Oakland account will appear in your Mails, Contacts, Calendar list if it has been set up correctly.

Confirm the account setup

  1. Click on Mail icon on iPhone
  2. Select "Oakland" account

  3. Check inbox for messages
  4. Send out a test email


Troubleshooting Tips


If your messages will not download or you are experiencing difficulties in setting up your account:

  1. 2-step verification Must be turned off. Click Here for instructions on how to turn off 2-step verification.

  2. Perform the NetID account unlock service - Unlock Captcha at https://www.google.com/accounts/UnlockCaptcha

    • Enter your NetID (with the "@oakland.edu")
    • Enter your NetID password
    • Click Submit
  3. On the iPhone - Review Mail Settings
    • Go to Settings
    • Go to Mail, Contacts, Calendars
    • Click on your Oakland email ccount
    • Make sure that Mail is ON
    • Click on Account
    • Click on SMTP to verify settings
      1. Click on smtp.gmail.com
        1. Server: ON
        2. Host Name: smtp.gmail.com
        3. User Name:Complete NetID account name ie. Smith@oakland.edu '’

        4. Password: NetID password

        5. Use SSL: ON

        6. Authentication: Password

        7. Server Port: 587

        8. Click DONE,

    • Go back to account
    • Click on Advanced

      1. Verify Incoming Settings

        1. Use SSL: ON

        2. Authentication: Password

        3. IMAP Path Prefix: Blank

        4. Server Port: 993 or 995
