Installing a Network Printer with Local Drivers

Use this document if you receive an error while installing a printer on a Windows 2000 machine that is similar to:

“The server on which the "Printer Driver Here" printer resides does not have the correct printer driver installed. If you want to install the driver on your local computer, click OK.”

  • Double click on ADD PRINTER
  • Click NEXT until you see a screen like below
  • Be sure that LOCAL PRINTER is selected and the check box for “Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer” is not checked. Click NEXT

You will now see a screen like below. Be sure to select “Create a new port” and to change the TYPE to “Local Port.”

  • Click NEXT
  • You will then be prompted for the port name of the printer. Enter in the port name similar to the picture below. Note the server goes first and then the printer name

  • You will then be prompted for the printer driver. Select “Have Disk” from the window.

  • You will now be prompted for the location of the driver. Enter in the path where the print drivers are located. Click BROWSE after you have entered the path.

  • A new window appears. Select the correct folder for the manufacturer and model of the printer, and then double click on the file that is presented to you in the folder for the printer you have selected.

  • You will now be back at the screen which asks where the driver is located, but this time it shows the location of the driver in the text box. Click OK.
  • Now you will be asked which model printer to install. Click on the model you wish to install and then click NEXT.

  • Next you will be asked for the name of the printer. This printer has a queue name of LITHIUM and it is located on the server PRINT, thus the name to provide is as follows: lithium on PRINT.
  • Be sure to specify whether the printer should be the default printer on the system or not. Then click NEXT

  • You will be asked whether or not you want to share the printer. Normally you would not share the printer, so keep the default setting of “Do not share this printer” and click NEXT
  • You will be asked if you would like to print a test page. Normally you would want to do so. Click FINISH when you are done. You have successfully installed the printer.

  • The printer is then installed on the machine and should be tested.
