Department of Modern Languages and Literature
Welcome to the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures

Chris Clason Chair of DMLWelcome to the Web site of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures and the Language Technology Center.

MLL faculty members are energetic and devoted. They spend much time with students in a "small college" atmosphere yet produce impressive research.

MLL offers undergraduate majors in French, German, and Spanish language and literature, Latin American language and civilization, German Studies, two modern languages, and a major combining language and business. We also offer minors in the languages listed above plus Japanese. There is a two year Chinese and Arabic program. Students may prepare for teaching careers in our five-year secondary teaching and certification program (STEP). Students can also obtain translation certificates and participate in programs that prepare them for future involvement in a global context.

Many of our students study abroad in programs operated by or affiliated with Oakland University.

The Language Center houses a new interactive video, audio, and a computer setup including satellite programming. The Department has a number of exchange programs with partner universities in other countries. The overseas program descriptions can be viewed at www2.oakland.edu/ie.
