An official closing and/or cancellation of classes may occur due to severe weather conditions, non-functioning of university mechanical systems, or other unforeseen circumstances. During official closings, all scheduled classes and special events are canceled; all university offices are closed; and official university operations cease, though specific exceptions may be authorized as directed by appropriate university officials.

Students, faculty and staff are advised to refer to the following sources for information on official university closings and/or the cancellation of classes and special events, including athletic events:

• Check the home page of the Oakland University website at www.oakland.edu.
• Registered cell phone users can expect a text message alert (excluding cancellations of athletic and special events).
• Call the Oakland University school closing hotline at (248) 370-2000. A recorded message will be carried on the system, which can handle 52 calls at one time.
• Tune in to the following TV and radio stations for school closing listings:

• WJBK-TV FOX 2
• WDIV-TV Channel 4
• WXYZ-TV Channel 7
• WJR AM 760
• WWJ AM 950

Please do not telephone the Oakland University Police Department or switchboard. OU police dispatchers are expected to be available to receive communications of an emergency nature and to stay in communication with patrol vehicles.

Online classes
When Oakland University is officially closed or classes canceled, synchronous online classes or synchronous online events in classes — those which require online presence at an established time such as a planned discussion or a class involving Elluminate — are also canceled. Asynchronous online classes and asynchronous online events in classes — those for which there is no set meeting time — are not subject to cancellation when Oakland University is closed.
