 Research Interests

Research in Martic Lab is on the interface of chemistry and biology, and focuses on designing functional bioconjugates for understanding the biological processes at the fundamental level. Current research projects combine organic synthesis and analytical chemistry for probing the biomolecular interactions in solution and on surfaces. The optical spectroscopy and electrochemistry are typically used to study the key interactions between peptides, proteins, and DNA. The biological targets of interests are: 1) amyloid peptides and tau proteins in Alzheimer’s disease, 2) biologically relevant metal ions (Ca(II), Zn(II) etc.), and 3) DNA damage. Our interdisciplinary research program combines the organic synthesis, analytical chemistry and surface modifications towards the development of new functional biomolecules as sensing probes in chemical biology.

The current research themes:

  1. Peptide bioconjugate mimics for probing neurodegenerative diseases
  2. Fluorescent peptide-based materials
  3. Designer peptides for metal ion detection and screening
  4. DNA conjugates for monitoring oxidative damage
  5. Electrochemical assays for probing protein folding and aggregation
