The Conference on Music Learning and Teaching explored a range of topics which examined musical thinking and musical understanding in performing, listening, composing and improvising. Presentations were grounded in diverse perspectives and reflected a range of research approaches. An important part of the conference was the interaction among the presenters and all participants, including a significant number of K-12 music educators. Keynote speakers for the conferences were Margaret Barrett, University of Queensland and Lucy Green, University of London.

Arts-Based Research in Music Education: A Professional Development Research Conference was designed for faculty and graduate students involved in arts-based research, as well as research advisers. Presentations focused on arts-based methodologies, including narrative, as applied to music education. Because this was a professional development conference, projects at various stages of completion were included and there was opportunity for significant feedback. In addition to sessions on completed or ongoing research, the conference examined the use of arts-based methodologies in music education. The keynote speaker for this conference was Margaret Macintyre Latta, University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
