Memberships

An affiliation with OU is required to purchase a membership, guest pass or mini-pass. For those who are not affiliated with OU, an affiliation can be obtained through Oakland University Credit Union membership. OU’s Rec Center is not a public facility.

Rec Center staff are happy to give tours of the building at any time; just stop in and ask for a tour. Information for self-guided tours also is available. However, for large groups, we ask that you call the Rec Center in advance to schedule a tour.

Please find available Rec Center memberships below.

Enrolled Students
Students enrolled in at least one on-campus course also are members of the Rec Center for each term they are enrolled because they are automatically billed the Rec Center fee, which is a mandatory fee that students pay along with their tuition.

Continuing Students
Continuing students are those who were registered in the previous term/semester and are eligible to enroll in classes in the future. Memberships may be purchased for only one semester at the continuing student rate. Recent graduates also are eligible for one semester at the continuing student rate. Spring and summer terms may be purchased as one semester or separately.

Hostel Students
Hostel students are students living in Oakland University Housing for a limited period of time. They are eligible for Rec Center membership during the time they are living in campus housing and must bring the card they were issued by University Housing to be eligible for the hostel rate.

New Students
A student who is not currently taking classes, but has registered for the upcoming semester, has the option of purchasing a current semester student membership or a guest pass. Proof of registration is required.

Employees
All faculty and staff employed by the university or those who have a primary work location at the university and are employed by a firm that has a contractual relationship with the university are eligible for Rec Center membership. Verification of current OU employment is necessary to join.

Retirees
Individuals who hold an official OU retiree card are eligible for Rec Center membership and receive the same rates as current employees.

Alumni
Individuals who graduated from Oakland University are eligible for Rec Center membership. Verification of alumni status is necessary to join.

President's Club Members
Members of The President's Club, Oakland University's oldest donor organization, are eligible for Rec Center membership.

Parents
Parents of currently enrolled OU students are eligible to purchase Rec Center membership on a semester basis at the affiliates rate.

Other Affiliated Members
On occasion, individuals have an affiliation with the university that is not defined in any of the other categories listed here and are eligible for Rec Center membership. In this case, the director of Campus Recreation will confirm the affiliation.

Spouses/Significant Others
Currently enrolled or continuing students, employees, retirees, OUAA members, alumni, and other affiliated members may add a spouse or significant other to their Rec Center membership. A spouse or significant other is defined as a person living at the same address as the eligible affiliate who has a financial or legal relationship with that affiliate. Proof of this relationship is required.

If the eligible affiliate chooses not to purchase a Rec Center membership, the spouse or significant other may purchase one at the highest rate charged for that affiliated group.

Children

Currently enrolled or continuing students, employees, retirees, OUAA members, alumni, and other affiliated members may add their dependant children, up to age 22, to their Rec Center membership. Proof of this relationship is required.

Children ages 1-18 who are living at home are considered dependants and must enter the facility with their parent or legal guardian. Children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian at all times in the facility. For dependants ages 18-22, who are living with their OU affiliated parent or legal guardian, their parent or guardian must have a Rec Center membership to add them as a dependant onto their primary membership. For more information, see the Dependant Child and Young Adult Policies.

Corporate Associates
The Corporate Associates Program identifies individuals eligible to purchase Rec Center membership as a result of their employer’s contributions to Oakland University.

Sponsored Members

Current Rec Center members may sponsor one additional membership, which cannot exceed the length of the sponsor’s current membership. Sponsored members are eligible for all services and programs, except sponsorship, and may bring guests.

The current member and sponsored member must come to the Rec Center together as proof of the sponsoring agreement. This must occur with each renewal as well. All membership fees for the sponsored member are due at the time of purchase.

Community Members
Community membership is available to individuals or families with no affiliation to the university. This membership only is available during the spring and summer months (May-August).

Membership Eligibility
OU’s Recreation Center is not a public facility. An affiliation with OU is required to purchase a membership, guest pass or mini-pass. See Membership Eligibility for more information on who is eligible for membership. For information on membership fees for students, employees, alumni, and other affiliates as well as guest passes, mini-passes and refunds, see Membership Rates.

Entry Requirements
Proper identification must be shown at all times when entering the Rec Center building. Campus Recreation staff reserve the right to ask for additional forms of identification at any time.

Dependent Child and Young Adult Policies
A parent or legal guardian, who is a member, must enter the facility with their children under 18 years old and must accompany their children under 16 years old at all times in the facility.

  • Children 7 years old and younger should be within an arm’s length of their parent or guardian in the same area of the facility.
  • Children 8-15 years old must be supervised by a parent or guardian in the same activity area.
  • Children under 16 years old may not use the spa, fitness center or be present during personal training sessions. (Exception: children who have completed the T.G.I.F. program).
  • Children ages 16-18 must enter the facility with a parent or legal guardian member, but do not need to be accompanied by that individual at all times while using general recreational space. However, the parent or legal guardian must remain in the Rec Center during the child’s visit. These children are able to participate in fitness classes and may swim and use the spa and fitness center.  Note: Children ages 16 and 17 need to be accompanied by an adult when using the fitness center.
  • Young adult members (18-22 years old) will be admitted to the facility upon showing a valid GrizzCard ID or Rec Center issued ID. They may use any aspect of the facility available to other members.

Parents or guardians are expected to be in a position to provide adequate supervision at all times. If the child is not with a parent or legal guardian, a member of the facility who is over the age of 18 must accompany him/her. The same standard of parental supervision will be expected of the sponsoring member.

Unsafe or inappropriate behavior will result in the child being asked to leave the activity area.

Guest Policy
Rec Center members and eligible self-sponsored guests who are 18 years of age or older may sign in up to two guests per visit at a cost of $8 (student) or $8 (non-student) per day per guest or $16 for a weekend pass, which is valid from Friday at 5 p.m. through closing on Sunday. If members wish to sign in more than two guests per visit, they must notify the Rec Center in advance and receive prior permission from a member of the Campus Recreation professional staff.

All guests who are 16 or older must show a valid photo ID, such as a driver’s license, and sign in at the Welcome Center. Members must remain in the building with their guests at all times and are responsible for the conduct of their guests.

Non-participant entry into the Rec Center for things such as tours and events does not require the purchase of a guest pass, however, some form of ID may be necessary.

Guest Passes

Guest passes entitle non-members access to the facility either through a self-sponsorship (restricted to specific affiliated groups) or sponsorship by a current member or an eligible affiliate. Guest passes are sold at the Welcome Center from the time the building opens until one hour prior to closing.

Self-sponsored Guests

Self-sponsored guests may include currently enrolled students who have not paid the Rec Center fee, OU faculty, staff, alumni, official OU retirees, MSU Federal Credit Union members and President’s Club members. Proof of these affiliations is required. Once self-sponsored guests pay for their own guest pass, they may sponsor up to two guests per visit at the current guest pass rate.

Fraudulent Use of ID
It is a violation of the Recreation Center policy to fraudulently enter the Rec Center by using another person’s GirzzCard or Rec Center issued ID. It also is a violation to give a non-student member or non-member your GrizzCard or Recreation Center issued ID for the purpose of allowing them to enter the Rec Center.

Both parties involved (person whose name appears on the ID and the person attempting to enter) will receive an automatic suspension of the student/member’s Rec Center privileges for a period of two weeks.

The ID Advisory Board will review the case, and both parties will be notified if any changes in this sanction are advised. Upon notification by the ID Advisory Committee, the parties have the option to appeal to the Advisory Board or meet with the director of the facility.
