Tonya Allen

Allen_bioTonya Allen was appointed to the Board in September of 2016 to serve an eight-year term. Presently, she serves as president and chief executive officer of the Skillman Foundation, a Detroit-based organization dedicated to improving the lives of Detroit children by helping to create pathways to high school graduation, college, successful careers and fulfilling lives.

Highlights of her two-decade long career include many successful philanthropic, government and community initiatives. She served as the architect of the 10-year, $100-million Good Neighborhoods Initiative; orchestrated the development of a $200-million citywide education reform organization named Excellent Schools Detroit; and co-chaired and convened the Coalition for the Future of Detroit’s Schoolchildren, which resulted in a $666-million investment by the State of Michigan.

Allen was named to Crain’s Detroit Business 40 under 40 list, received the national Brick Award given to activists under the age of 30 by Rolling Stone Magazine, and was one of the first Detroiters to receive the prestigious Marshall Memorial Fellowship. She was named a Detroit News Michiganian of the Year in 2015, a Crain’s Detroit Business Newsmaker of the Year in 2015, and one of the Chronicle of Philanthropy’s “5 nonprofit innovators to watch” in 2013.

Allen holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology and master’s degree in social work and public health, all from the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor. She is an appointed member of Oakland University’s Board of Trustees, and serves on the boards of Council of Foundations, Council of Michigan Foundations, Detroit Promise Zone Authority and Campaign for Black Male Achievement, among others.
