Overview 
  • This program is designed for both general education and special education teachers
  • 24 to 40 graduate credits, depending on prior credentials
  • The cohort group will take 6-8 courses over five terms
  • Completion of a practicum is required
  • All credits may be applied toward the Master of Education in Special Education degree
  • OU has been educating teachers of students with ASD for more than 25 years
  • Team of expert faculty and special lecturers deliver instruction

 Admission Requirements
  • Undergraduate or graduate degree with a GPA of 3.0 or above
  • Hold or be eligible for a valid Michigan elementary or secondary teaching certificate
  • Potential for success in the program

Option A (24 credits)
Requires an applicant to hold a prior special education endorsement in Michigan. Meets state requirements for the teaching endorsement in ASD.

SE 591  *Practicum: Autism Spectrum Disorder K-12 - Summer 2013
*Practicum may be done in the student's own classroom, if appropriate. The Department will consider
students' work obligations and assist them in meeting this non-waiveable requirement.


Option B (32-40 credits)
Requires an applicant to have a valid teaching certificate in the State of Michigan. Option B is for teachers who do not currently have a special education endorsement. This program meets state requirements for the ASD teaching endorsement.

Foundation Core*
SE 501  Introduction to the Student with Special Needs (or equivalent) 
FE 506  Child Development, Variability and Learning (or equivalent) 
*Foundation courses may be waived with documentation of equivalents, reducing overall credit
requirements by four to eight credits.
