Overview
This course presents an overview of the lives of adolescents and adults with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
It includes the following:
- Review of emotional and physical development
- Gender identity
- Self-concept
- Behavioral/social/communicative challenges
- Transitions to adulthood
- Employment
- Post-secondary options
- Residential options
Course content also includes strategies for increasing friendships, decreasing inappropriate behaviors and a review of age appropriate materials for developing social/emotional understanding of sexuality. The course also reviews the desired Personal Outcomes for adolescents/ adults with ASD that result in an improved Quality of Life.

- Child and adolescent development: Typically developing individuals/ individuals on the autism spectrum
- Assessing the adolescent and adult with ASD
- Quality of Life issues for adolescents and adults with ASD
- Depression and anxiety for adolescents/adults with ASD/ other co-morbid conditions
- Adults with ASD: Employment, transition to employment; residential living and transition to residential living
- Socialization; transition to social contacts within a community
- Issues regarding puberty and sexuality

Janet E. Graetz, PhD, Course Leader

Dr. Jane E. Graetz is an Associate Professor at Oakland University in the Department of Human Development and Child Studies. For the past 25 years, her life has revolved around individuals with autism spectrum disorders.
Graetz joined Oakland University in 2003 and teaches courses in autism that focus on behavioral issues, collaboration and consultation, and language. Research interests include the topic of spirituality and Asperger's Syndrome, and quality-of-life issues for adolescents and adults with autism spectrum disorders.
She has presented nationally on topics that include the use of visuals for individuals with autism spectrum disorders and quality of life for individuals with disabilities. In 2006, she presented her research on spirituality and Asperger's Syndrome at the national conference of the Autism Society of America. |
