Audience

The course is intended for general and special education teachers, administrators and staff who support instruction.




Overview

“Assistive Technology (AT) is any item, piece of equipment, or product that is used to increase, maintain or improve the abilities of individuals with disabilities: tools to promote independence across all areas of daily living (Lee, 2009).”

Participants in this AT class will view, experience and learn to use a variety of both low and high tech tools to support academic achievement for all students.  This course is delivered primarily online but will also have an in-class component, incorporating AT device demonstrations and hands-on application for further learning. 

Content
  • Demonstrate the use of a number of low-tech and high-tech tools (including software) designed to accommodate student learning and communication in the core curriculum.

  • Promote student independence by developing plans on how to implement the use of low and high-tech tools in the classroom.

  • Understand aspects of the law as they pertain to the necessity of providing appropriate technology tools to individuals with disabilities.
  • Gain proficiency and present on a chosen Assistive Technology Device and its applications for increasing success in the classroom environment.
  • Recognize various types of assistive technology available for aiding communication (Augmentative/Alternative Communication Devices).
