Athletic Scholarship

DescriptionAwarded to student athletes with ability in one of the intercollegiate sports offered at OU. Scholarship amounts vary.  Awards are made by the Office of Athletics.

Athletic Tuition Differential

Description

Awarded to athletes who are not residents of the state of Michigan.  The award provides the difference between in-state and out-of-state tuition.  Full-time enrollment is required. Awards are made by the Office of Athletics.

Betty and Kiichi Usui Endowed Scholarship

Description
This scholarship provides funds to a student who promotes understanding between eastern and western cultures. The scholarship will provide tuition support for a student engaged in some form of Asian studies, and/or who through their service and interest has promoted cultural understanding between east and west.
Criteria for Eligibility:
  • Applicants must be enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student
  • Applicants must be in good academic standing

Diane Norris Memorial Scholarship Award

Description

This $1,500 scholarship is made possible by the memorial contributions made to honor Dr. Diane Norris, former associate dean of the School of Nursing. It is intended for a student who plans to work in pediatric nursing upon graduation.

Applicants must meet the following requirements to be eligible:

  • Fully enrolled in basic BSN, Accelerated Second Degree BSN or MSN program as stated on the student’s School of Nursing Plan of Study.
  • Have achieved a minimum overall Oakland University GPA of 3.7 or above for undergraduate students or a graduate GPA of 3.5 or above for graduate students.
  • Student in good academic and disciplinary standing according to Oakland University and School of Nursing standards.
  • Complete a free Application for Federal Student Aid on the web at www.fafsa.ed.gov as soon after January 1 as possible for the upcoming school year.
  • Have demonstrated financial need as determined by the university’s Student Financial Services.

George R. and Helen Klein Memorial Scholarship

DescriptionBarry Klein, a 1968 graduate of Oakland University, established the George R. and Helen Klein Memorial Scholarship in 1997 in honor of his parents. He credits OU for teaching him to think critically and question why things are the way they are. 

Eligibility Requirements:
  • Graduate students enrolled in the Counseling program
  • Maintain a 3.0 or higher GPA
  • Have a primary interest in addictions counseling, education and/or treatment
  • Financial need may be considered

Graduate Study Grant in Art and Art History

Description

This grant of $200 is intended to provide the art history or studio art major with textbooks or art supplies during her/his first semester as a graduate student in art history, studio art or a related area. The applicant must be a declared art history or studio art major in good standing and must have been enrolled in classes at Oakland University for two consecutive (fall/winter) semesters prior to their first semester in a graduate program. To apply, the student must complete an application form and submit a copy of a letter of acceptance from a graduate program in art history or studio art prior to the first semester of study. Art history and studio art alumni may also apply for this grant up to one year after graduation. After completing her/his first semester of graduate study, the student will send us a brief note regarding his/her academic progress. Obtain applications in the Art and Art History Department Office, 310 Wilson Hall.

DescriptionEligibility Requirements:
  • Be a part or full-time graduate student enrolled in a degree-seeking program in the School of Education and Human Services

Harold and Pearl Cafone Graduate Studies Award

DescriptionProfessor Emeritus Harold Cafone was instrumental in the development of the Ph.D. program in Reading and is also remembered for his early involvement in the Guizhou Education Exchange Program. Family and friends of Hal Cafone have established the Harold and Pearl Cafone Graduate Studies Fund to honor his work. An award committee will select the awardee(s). The winner(s) will be notified of the award by mail. 

Awards may vary from year to year with a maximum of $1,500 being awarded annually. Awards may be used to support tuition and other costs of the Guizhou - Oakland University Education Exchange program.

Harry Hahn Reading Endowment Award

DescriptionThe Harry Hahn Reading Award may be used to pursue scholarly, teaching or service activities in reading, writing and language arts. Amounts awarded will vary based on needs as outlined in the proposal; the maximum amount awarded in any one year is $1,500.

Eligible students for the Harry Hahn Reading Endowment Award are Ph.D. students or full or part-time faculty members in the Department of Reading and Language Arts.

International First-time Graduate to Oakland University Scholarship

DescriptionScholarship applicants must be newly admitted to Oakland University as first-time, graduate, international students, who intend to be F-1 or J-1 visa holders. (Transfer students currently in the United States are eligible.) Students must have a minimum, equivalent GPA of 3.5 from a previous institution. Applicants must demonstrate active involvement in community service activities in their home countries or previous institutions, such as student leadership roles, student advocacy, organizing and planning school or community programming, and improving the overall quality of life in their communities. Scholarship recipients are required to contribute in meaningful ways to campus activities at OU during their first semester. 

Applications must be returned to the International Students and Scholars Office in person, 157 North Foundation Hall. This scholarship is awarded in both fall and winter semesters, with one winner per semester. Please see the application for specific deadlines.

International Scholarly Achievement Award

Description
This award is made annually to one qualified Oakland University international student whose scholarly excellence is clearly recognized within the academic community. Scholarship applicants must be full-time, returning international students of undergraduate, graduate, or Ph.D. levels, who hold an F-1 or J-1 visa. Students must have a minimum OU GPA of 3.5. Applicants must demonstrate significant scholarly or creative contributions of national or international reputation in a given field during their studies at OU, which may include articles, essays, books, other scholarly publications and/or presentations at academic conferences. One to three sealed letters of recommendation, a typed personal statement, and resume or curriculum vitae should accompany the submitted application.

Description
Two awards are given, one in fall and one in winter, to Oakland University students who demonstrate active involvement in out-of-class activities at OU during the year the award is made, such as student leadership roles, student advocacy, promoting cross-cultural programming, and improving the overall quality of life of the Oakland community. The recipients of this award must be full-time, returning international students, who have a minimum OU GPA of 2.0 for undergraduates and 3.0 for graduates

Jacqueline I. Lougheed Master's Scholarship

Description

Jacqueline I. Lougheed made a generous gift to provide approximately $1,000-$2,000 annual awards to one or more Education Specialist or Doctoral students pursuing graduate work in Educational Leadership. Students enrolled in either of these SEHS programs may apply. An award committee will select the awardee(s) based on exemplary student achievement, dedication to educational leadership, and personal and professional goals. The winner(s) will be notified of the award by mail.

This non-renewable award is approximately $500 - $1,000 and may vary year to year. The award may be used for:

  • tuition and books at Oakland University, including professional development courses at the University
  • travel and related expenses for attending professional conferences related to educational leadership
  • expenses related to completion of a Master's action research project

Eligibility Requirements: 

  • Education Specialist or Doctoral students pursuing graduate work in Educational Leadership
  • have completed at least 24 credit hours
  • have a GPA of 3.3 or above in the Program.
  • submit an essay and written recommendations from two department faculty members and one immediate supervisor or school principal at your place of employment.

Oakland University Michigan Indian Tuition Waiver

Description

The Michigan Indian Tuition Waiver program is administered by the Michigan Department of Civil Rights (MDCR).  Application information can be accessed on MDCR website, or by contacting MDCR at 110 W. Michigan Avenue, Suite 800, Lansing, MI 48933, or at (231) 439-5247.  The MDCR notifies Oakland University of student eligibility.  Oakland University will verify the following: The student must be admitted to an Oakland University degree seeking undergraduate or gradute/professional program; and the student must provide adequate proof of Michigan residency for not less than 12 consecutive months; and awards are only applicable to registered Oakland University courses which are part of the degree program (excludes credit be exam, auditing, CLEP, consortium credits, continuing education, professional development, guest, high school, non-degree, etc.); and the student meet the requirements of the Oakland University Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy (SAP).  Awards are made by the Office of Financial Aid.

Quesada, Vicente Fox

Description

This award was established to honor Vicente Fox Quesada, President of Mexico and Mexico’s rich culture and history. Awarded to students seeking continuing education opportunities at Oakland University, or students pursuing undergraduate or graduate degrees at the University, or to students seeking international study or cross-cultural opportunities in Mexico or the United States. Eligible applicants may be full-time or part-time students and must be enrolled at and in good standing with Oakland University. Undergraduate students must maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA and graduate students must maintain a minimum of 3.0 GPA and demonstrate the ability to successfully complete their educational program. Application information is available through the Provost’s Office in Wilson Hall.  Awards are made by the Office of The Provost.

Returning Alumni Scholarship

Description
This is a non-renewable, $3,000 scholarship. Two scholarships are awarded per academic year. Applicants must be an Oakland University alumnus or alumna having earned at least one prior degree from OU. Must be admitted into a graduate or second undergraduate degree program, and be enrolled in at least 8 credit hours per semester for the duration of the award and maintain at least a 3.00 cumulative GPA. Applicants must be current members of the Alumni Association.

Sidney W. Graber Memorial Award

DescriptionThe family of Dr. Sidney Graber has made a generous gift to provide one $1,000 award annually to a student pursuing graduate work in Special Education. The gift was made in memory of Dr. Graber, the founder of the Special Education program at Oakland University. An award committee will select the awardee. The winner will be notified of the award before registration for the Winter semester.

Description

The Study Abroad Award is for students interested in studying abroad through an Oakland University travel abroad program. This award is available to students in the School of Education and Human Services.

  • Be a student in the School of Education and Human Services
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above
  • Preference is given to those students who have not yet traveled abroad.

Toni S. and Kenneth Walters Student Literacy Scholarship

DescriptionDr. Toni S. Walters was influential during her Oakland University teaching career. A number of her former students, as a tribute to her influence, celebrated her career and retirement by honoring Dr. Walters with gifts toward a scholarship bearing her and her husband’s name. With those gifts, Dr. Walters is establishing an endowment for an annual tuition award benefiting students studying literacy. 

The award can be used for tuition, fees, books and other costs associated with enrollment in the School of Education and Human Services.

Eligibility Requirements: 
  • Full or part-time undergraduate, masters or doctoral student with a declared major in the Reading and Language Arts program 
Please note since there is not an undergraduate Reading and Language Art program currently, the committee has selected to use Reading courses on an applicant’s transcript as evidence of studying literacy when evaluating undergraduate student applications. 
  • Maintain a 3.2 or higher GPA. 
  • Discussing how they serve one’s community, emphasizing on commitment to ethnically and economically diverse communities in urban/metropolitan educational institutions.
  • Priority will be given for students who have demonstrated service in the field of literacy on either Oakland University’s campus (which could include a student organization) or through community service.

Students may only receive one Walters Endowed award in each academic year, but are otherwise eligible to apply for Endowment awards in other academic years.

Wesley Brooks Bennett Graduate Fellowship

Description

The endowment was established by Ronald Bennett and Distinguished Alumni Award winner Janet Bennett, Ph.D. The award provides tuition for graduate research credits and supplies.

Extremely well-qualified students are invited to apply to the Department of Chemistry for consideration for the Bennett Scholarship in Chemistry. Awards will be granted to full-time students whose undergraduate records not only give evidence of exceptional past academic achievement, but promise future high accomplishment as well. All decisions will be based on a student’s complete record, including grades, courses taken, test scores, letters of recommendation and a personal interview. 

Criteria for Eligibility:

  • Applicants must be enrolled as a graduate student
  • Applicants must be participating in research projects in the Department of Chemistry
  • Applicants must be in good academic standing

William and Diana Mitzelfeld Scholarship Award

Description

This $2,500 scholarship will be awarded to students in the BSN or MSN program.
