Overview
The 2012 Oncology Rehabilitation Symposium will consist of
lectures and laboratories designed to provide participants with
information and skills related to clinical management of individuals
living with, living through, or living beyond cancer. The presentations
this year will include functional massage, oncology nutrition, and
emotional support techniques. The Symposium will also include updates on
program development, cardiopulmonary exercise training techniques,
oncology research, and a networking and sharing session.
Objectives
Throughout the stages of cancer survivorship, the participants will be able to:
- Describe and explain common oncology related soft tissue pathophysiology
- Describe and explain functional massage techniques and methods
- Evaluate evidence for functional massage and determine its applicability to soft tissue conditions
- Effectively perform functional massage techniques to upper & lower quarter soft tissues
- Explain and discuss evidence based emotional support mechanisms
and identify resources that can be effectively incorporated into
clinical practice
- Explain and discuss evidence based nutrition for individuals in
cancer survivorship and effectively address nutritional myths and
misconceptions
- Evaluate oncology research and practice updates related to program development and interventions
Presentations
Lectures, demonstrations, laboratory practice sessions, and case
study problem solving methods will be used to present information to
attendees.
The lab session will be held at Oakland University and is open to the first 40 registrants.
Requirements
Participants must be licensed physical therapists, occupational
therapists, physical therapist assistants, or graduate students in an
accredited physical therapy program. Participants must wear exercise
attire and shoes appropriate to fully participate in laboratory
activities.

CEUs
Course is approved for 14.0 contact hours by the Michigan
Physical Therapy Association (MPTA) for use as Professional Development

Refunds
Refunds will be given to participants cancelling one week before
the conference. Refunds for cancellation will be subject to a $50.00
administrative fee. Cancellations within one week of the conference will
not be refunded. Oakland University reserves the right to cancel this
conference and participants will receive a 100% refund in the event that
this occurs.
