Varner Vitality Lecture Series: Dr. Daniel J. Levitin “This Is Your Brain on Music”
4/7/2014, 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM
Daniel J. Levitin, Ph.D. is the James McGill Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience at McGill University. He is the author of the international best-selling book, "This Is Your Brain On Music: The Science of a Human Obsession." Two award-winning documentaries based on his book have been broadcast internationally: The Music Instinct co-starred Dr. Levitin and Bobby McFerrin, and The Musical Brain co-starred Dr. Levitin and Sting.
He will discuss three broad questions from the cognitive neuroscience of music: why we like the music we like, how people become musical experts, and what areas of the brain are activated by music. His talk will feature musical examples.
In addition to his work in cognitive neuroscience, Dr. Levitin is actively engaged in disseminating science in the public interest, through public speaking and television interviews. He is a frequent guest on NPR and CBC radio.
He earned his Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology at the University of Oregon, his B.A. from Stanford University in Cognitive Psychology, and completed post-doctoral training at Stanford University Medical School and UC Berkeley.
Dr. Levitin’s lecture is presented as part of the Varner Vitality Lecture Series, named in honor of Oakland’s first chancellor, Durward “Woody” Varner. This series aims to energize and sustain the highest academic and scholarly aspirations of the university community.
