Founder and Executive Director of the Program in Narrative Medicine at Columbia University

September 13, 2013, 1:30 - 3:30 pm

Human Health Building 1050  |  Oakland University  |  Rochester, Michigan

When a clinician is faced with an ill person needing care, all dimensions of that clinician's person are on call—his or her scientific knowledge, narrative knowledge, memory, imagination, manual skills, sense of beauty, grasp of meaning, optimism, pessimism. To give effective clinical care requires effective contact with the ill person. This talk will describe the many ways, using all these dimensions, we have to establish and maintain contact with our patients.

Dr. Rita Charon, founder and executive director of the Program in Narrative Medicine at Columbia University, will be the guest of the Department of Counseling and the OUWB School of Medicine on September 13, 2013. Dr. Charon is a general internist and narratologist who completed her MD at Harvard in 1978 and Ph.D. in English at Columbia in 1999. Author of Narrative Medicine: Honoring the Stories of Illness (Oxford University Press, 2006), Dr. Charon is internationally recognized for her pioneering work.

Dr. Charon's visit is being sponsored by the Faircloth Lecture Series, a collaborative program focused on creating interdisciplinary conversations that further the goal of enhancing communication and interaction between doctors, patients and patients' loved ones.
