Breaking down a staggering range of more than 160 print and television ads, Kilbourne uncovers a steady stream of sexist and misogynistic images and messages, laying bare a world of frighteningly thin women in positions of passivity, and a restrictive code of femininity that works to undermine girls and women in the real world. At once provocative and inspiring, Killing Us Softly 4 stands to challenge yet another generation of students to take advertising seriously, and to think critically about its relationship to sexism, eating disorders, gender violence, and contemporary politics. Boggs’s constantly evolving strategy – her willingness to re-evaluate and change tactics in relation to the world around her – drives the story forward.

Angela Davis, Bill Moyers, Bill Ayers, Ruby Dee and Ossie Davis, Danny Glover, Bogg’s late husband Jame and a host of other Detroit comrades across three generations help shape this uniquely American story. As she wrestles with a Detroit in ongoing transition, contradictions of violence and non-violence, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, the 1967 rebellions, and non-linear notions of time and history, Boggs emerges with an approach that is radical in its simplicity and clarity: revolution is not an act of aggression or merely a protest.

About the director:

Grace Lee’s most recent feature film, set during the 2012 presidential campaign, JANEANE FROM DES MOINES, premiered at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival. But perhaps the single greatest influence on all of these ideological strands of the late-20th and early-21st centuries has been William Pierce’s The Turner Diaries. For nearly forty years, this dystopian fantasy novel has been directly connected to violence against non-whites and has supplied a template from which white racists of all stripes derived inspiration for their hate-driven ideologies. This lecture will consider the racist, apocalyptic vision of this book and demonstrate the ways in which it continues to act as a significant impetus for xenophobic violence.

See the History Comes Alive flier for more lecture dates.

Admission is free, but reservations are requested (contact info below).

This lecture series is made possible by generous contributions from the Knudsen Family Foundation, the Office of the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, the Office of the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost. Special thanks to founding sponsors John and Annette Carter.

Tue, 10 Mar 2015 19:00:00 GMT OU Brass Band & Five Lakes Silver Band http://www.oakland.edu/apps/events/event.aspx?s=C&EventID=9936 http://www.oakland.edu/apps/events/event.aspx?s=C&EventID=9936 Contest Music. Performing in competitions is a part of the culture of brass bands around the world. Recent events in the US and around the world have targeted groups and individuals based on their race/ethnicity and religious affiliation. We have heard from many students about their concerns over many of a number of recent events. Violence perpetrated by such bias victimizes not only those directly affected, but also all those who identify with the victims, and indeed all people of conscience.

These senseless acts of violence were born in bigotry and nurtured on hate. They remind us that racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia, and the targeting of individuals because of their group identity, lifestyle, or beliefs are not relegated to the past, but still plague our world.

As a community, we condemn such violence. As healers, we remember that all people deserve protection, respect and dignity, and a chance to flourish.

We are taking this opportunity to reach out to students who feel targeted or unsafe as a result of world events or personal attacks. We stress the pivotal role of Diversity and Inclusion here at OUWB. The Diversity Office and the Diversity Council are here to listen, to provide support, to advise, and to educate. We ask that during these challenging and unsettling times, all of us remain vigilant and extend the hand of community in support of each other.

In the coming days, the Diversity and Inclusion office, in conjunction with the Diversity Council, will be hosting a forum that will provide an opportunity for dialogue and support for all members of the OUWB community to voice their concerns, support their colleagues, and the discuss impact of the many events that have taken place over the last year.
