Applied Learning with Classroom and Clinical Practice
This course is a combination of classroom and field experience providing an introduction to Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), and its application to the student with special needs. Emphasis will be placed on incidental and group learning strategies which will more readily generalize to educational settings.

An experiential learning opportunity, students will complete an six-hour clinical practice at Beaumont HOPE Center, following a weekend ABA seminar.

The program is based on scientifically supported techniques led by experts in the field of autism spectrum disorders and other developmental disabilities. Principles derived from decades of research that can be used to understand and treat behavioral issues educators and parents encounter daily, will be presented. You will learn a function-based approach to changing behavior in teaching new skills and in reducing problem behavior.

Topics
  • The growing field of Applied Behavior Analysis, history and principles
  • Understanding relationships among components of behavioral contingencies (antecedents, behavior, consequences) and variables affecting motivation
  • Evidence-based treatment
  • Functional assessment of undesirable behaviors commonly found in classroom settings, proactive strategies and communication
  • Effective teaching strategies for skill acquisition
  • Intervention plans to counter behavior interference
  • Conceptualization of "behavioral problems" in terms of behavioral excesses and deficits
