Oakland University again ranks among the safest college campuses in the nation according to The National Council for Home Safety and Security. It’s 2018 list of Safest College Campuses in America ranks Oakland second, behind only Brigham Young University, Rexburg, Idaho.

“Oakland has been steadily ascending a number of campus safety lists and now celebrates our highest ranking to date,” said Oakland University Police Chief Mark Gordon. “This is certainly a point of pride for the police department, yet we also know it takes a commitment to safety by every member of the campus community to earn this type of recognition.”

While Oakland had the highest ranking in the state of Michigan, Central Michigan University (No. 17), Ferris State University (No. 23), Michigan State University (No. 47) and the University of Michigan (No. 53) also earned spots in the top 100 this year.

The group’s alarms.com website says in part, “For parents sending their children off to college, safety is usually the number one concern. It is often the first time that kids are off on their own, living independently outside of the home. Choosing a school with a solid reputation for security and low potential for dangerous threats allows moms and dads to breathe easier once their kids ship off to earn a higher education.”

The website also reports rankings were based on the most recent data from the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting and the Campus Safety Security Survey put out by the U.S. Department of Education. Nearly all accredited institutions with enrollment over 10,000 students were considered in this project.

Each school’s safety score was calculated by analyzing crimes reported by universities, including rapes, robberies, assaults, burglaries, motor vehicle theft and arsons. Violent and property crime rates for the cities in which the schools were located, and the number of law enforcement officers employed by the institution per 1,000 students were also factored into each school’s score.

Based in Washington D.C., and founded in 2006, the National Council for Home Safety and Security is a national trade association comprised of licensed alarm installers, contractors, and other relevant trade groups across the United States. Alarms.org is the official website of the National Council for Home Safety and Security. On Alarms.org, consumers will find important research, articles, reports, and everything else they need to know about home security and safety.
