Transforming business education
With the business world constantly shifting, changing and adapting to new models, it has never been more important than now to make sure business schools educate students in the important theories of business, as well as in the actual application of those theories and development of related skills, including cultivating global understanding.
That means business education has to change as often as – or even more than – than the business world. It is also imperative to the success of our students and the world economy that the core foundation remains steadfast. The education our business students receive must equip them with the framework to adapt and operate in a business climate that evolves daily. >> Read more >>

| Turning around Michigan's Economy with business transformation expertise |
Turbulent times on Wall Street, dramatic industrial changes and the globalization of the marketplace have businesses scrambling to restructure their organizations and searching for the expertise to lead them toward the transformation necessary to survive this volatile climate. Michigan, leading the nation in unemployment and lost business revenue, is hit hardest by these challenges, as it struggles to nurse an ailing auto industry back to profitability.
Oakland University’s School of Business Administration, situated in the heart of metro Detroit’s business hub, is helping turn around the Michigan economy by ramping up research efforts and expanding educational offerings to provide this sorely-needed expertise.
Rajeev Singhal, assistant professor of finance, and an expert in financial distress and bankruptcy, is leading the SBA’s Accounting and Finance department’s initiative for curriculum coverage of transformational analysis and business restructuring. Singhal is also spearheading an initiative to propose a master’s-level program to emphasize this area. >> Read more >> |

| Scholars make the research their own |
“Research experience” listed on a student’s resume usually means assisting faculty members with their research. At OU’s School of Business Administration (SBA) research scholars not only serve as paid research assistants to faculty, they also design, develop and complete their own research projects – all at the undergraduate level.
Initially funded through a Chrysler LLC grant, the program introduces highly motivated students to an exciting new challenge, while providing faculty with rewarding results and new mentoring opportunities. After a highly successful inaugural year, the SBA has expanded the program to include additional students, more diverse research topics and a new theme scholar program in Social and Public Policy, with support from OU’s Office of the Provost. >> Read more >>

During his talks with students and others, Norrod emphasized the need for teamwork and planning to have a successful career as an entrepreneur. “Don’t let luck dictate your career” he advises. “Hire people smarter than you are. Get them to do things together outside of work and they will work better as a team.” >> Read more >>

| Area executive sees value in supporting SBA |
When John O’Reilly was invited to join the Board of Visitors for Oakland University’s School of Business Administration in 2005, he requested time to give the offer some thought.
“I didn’t graduate from OU, but our organization had a deep relationship with the university,” says O’Reilly, executive vice president of Palace Sports and Entertainment (PSE). Not only does PSE manage OU’s amphitheater, it also handles sponsorships and promotions for OU’s athletic teams. Plus, a number of PSE employees currently attend or have graduated from OU. “I thought it (board service) might be an opportunity to learn about the university and contribute to a great asset in the community,” O’Reilly says. >> Read more >>
