World AIDS Day at the OUWB

OUWB Recognizes World AIDS Day 2011! The Medical Library and Diversity & Multicultural Affairs partnered to host a very special event to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS at the School of Medicine. The event featured a variety of presentations including Dr. John Szela of Beaumont Hospital-Royal Oak who discussed the history and challenges of "Care of the HIV-positive Patient"; our own Dr. Melphine Harriott shared audio excerpts from her interview of David, a local HIV-positive patient, in "Perspectives from an HIV-positive patient"; and Joelle Gwynn of AIDS Partnership Michigan, a local non-profit, shared her experiences as a counselor and the mission and goals of the organization to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS and support those with HIV/AIDS. The event was an overwhelming success attended by nearly 50 OUWB students, faculty, and staff! Thank you to everyone who attended!

We would also like to give special thanks to Dr. Melphine Harriott and Stephanie Jurva for their aid in planning and coordinating the event!

Submit your book publications for Authors at Oakland! The Senate Library Committee and Kresge Libary will host the 7th Annual Authors at Oakland to honor faculty who have recently published on Wednesday, March 21, 2012! All faculty who have authored or co-authored books, book chapters, or edited volumes published between January 1, 2010 and December 31, 2011 are encouraged to submit their publications. DEADLINE IS JANUARY 16, 2012!

• January: Introduction to Evidence-based Medicine The session will serve as an introduction to the principles, process, and steps of practicing evidence-based medicine (EBM) and to the relevant online information resources. Barriers and approaches to teaching and practicing EBM in clinical settings will be discussed as well.

Upcoming Brown Bag Sessions These informal sessions include a brief presentation and demonstration followed by an open forum driven by participants! All OU faculty are welcome!

• Wednesday, December 14: Keeping Up with the Literature (12:30-1:30pm, KL 100) Stephanie Swanberg  shares strategies and techniques for keeping abreast of the latest research and news using RSS & email alerts. Demonstrations of Google Reader, PubMed, and Web of Science will be featured.

• Tuesday, January 10: Medical Library Resources 101 (12:00-1:00pm, KL 100) Stephanie Swanberg tours the Medical Library's online resource collection, including databases, journals, research guides, and services! Session content will be primarily driven by participants, so come prepared with a resource or two in mind!

**New: Medical Education Research Faculty Learning Community Dr. Misa Mi recently applied for and received a $1500 grant from Oakland University to create a multidisciplinary faculty learning community focused on educational research (scholarship in teaching and learning). A program of learning events, including seminars, workshops, group discussion sessions, and research forums will be featured.  All OUWB faculty interested in medical education research are encouraged to participate. If you are interested in becoming a member, please submit your application online. Series events, including topics, guest speakers, dates, and times are forthcoming! Opening Doors: Contemporary African American Academic Surgeons Traveling Exhibit When you return from winter break, check out the new National Library of Medicine traveling exhibit hosted by the Medical Library on display in Kresge! The exhibit features the journeys of four contemporary African American surgeons and educators: Alexa I. Canady, MD, LaSalle D. Lefall, MD, Claude H. Organ, MD, and Rosalyn P. Scott, MD, MSHA.
