Experts advise caution on IT security issues tied to personal devices

Sterling Heights, Mich. – Crime and information security statistics indicate that a laptop is stolen every 53 seconds and that 80 percent of the cost victims pay as a result of lost personal electronic devices is tied to data breaches.

Kathy Ossian, founder and CEO of Ossian Law, and Bob Breitman, president of information technology services company ITTW, invite business leaders to learn about the myriad legal issues tied to relying on personal electronic devices in the workplace during the Macomb-OU INCubator's next Lunch and Launch event on Thursday, Oct. 17.

In "BYOD (Bring Your Own Device): How Personal Devices Put Your Organization at Risk," Ossian and Breitman will discuss the practice of allowing employees and contractors to use laptops, smart phones, home computers and tablets to conduct business. They will argue that regardless of whether an organization allows full-time employees or contractors to use such devices, a workable policy needs to be in place.

Ossian's law firm focuses exclusively on information technology law. Prior to starting the practice, she was a senior principal at Miller Canfield, where she headed up the firm's Information Technology & Cyberlaw Section. Ossian has almost 30 years of legal experience and over 16 years of information technology law expertise. She is an advanced certified faculty member at the University of Phoenix and a long-time Best Lawyer in America and Michigan Super Lawyer in information technology law.

Breitman has over 35 years of business management and IT experience, including being the CIO of a $3.5 billion company that paid him to be paranoid. He is regularly asked to speak to national audiences on IT issues and cloud computing, and is the Cloud Track instructor for SPC International's Business Boot Camps.

This free lecture, set from noon to 1 p.m. at the Macomb-OU INCubator, will include a question and answer period. Coffee and dessert will be served, though guests are asked to bring their own lunch.

Those interested in attending the lecture are asked to register in advance by contacting Joan Carleton at (586) 884-9324 or e-mailing to macINC@oakland.edu.
