Information Mastery Program

Information Mastery Program with CME Credit The Medical Library is pleased to announce our Information Mastery faculty development series with CME credit is returning in the new year! Sessions are scheduled monthly January through June 2013 and will be offered at Beaumont Hospital Royal Oak and Beaumont Hospital Troy. William Beaumont Hospital designates this training activity for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s).
  • January: Introduction to Evidence-based Medicine The paradigm of practicing evidence-based medicine requires that physicians develop the ability to locate, appraise, and assimilate the best available clinical research evidence for patient care. Clinicians have a need to develop the competency in evidence-based practice to provide quality patient care and improve patient safety and to model best practices for medical students. Barriers and approaches to teaching and practicing EBM in clinical settings will be discussed as well. For more information, please see our flyer!

  • February: EBM Resources This session builds on the content provided in January's Introduction to Evidence-based Medicine. There are different ways of incorporating evidence into clinical practice: doing, using, replicating. For busy clinicians, you may want to adopt the more feasible mode "using" in practicing EBM. When a clinical question arises, you restrict your search to evidence resources that have already undergone rigorous critical appraisal. These pre-appraised resources are available in different packages and exist in various formats. This session is designed for busy clinicians who would like to learn how to access and use a variety of pre-appraised EBM resources in practicing EBM in clinical settings.

  • March: Searching PubMed Acquiring the current available clinical research evidence is one of the fundamental skills for practicing EBM. Clinicians need to enhance their skills in searching PubMed for the best evidence to inform their patient care decisions. This session is designed for those who have mastered basic PubMed search techniques and would like to learn about unique PubMed search capabilities (Limits, Clinical Queries, My NCBI) to retrieve relevant information for patient care and clinical research.

  • April: Tracking your Scholarly Publications' Impact on Clinical Research and Practice Thousands of journal articles are published each year disseminating the results of clinical research. How do you know if your research is having an impact on the field and contributing to best practice in clinical care? This session will cover a variety of scholarly metrics, including the h-index, impact factor, and total citations, and how you can use them effectively in evaluating your contribution to the field. In addition, information resources for locating and tracking your scholarly work will be demonstrated in such resources as Web of Science and Google Scholar.

  • May: Online Collaboration Tools There is a lot more than e-mail available to enhance remote collaboration. A variety of free online tools provide collaborators with the ability to meet, teach, and mentor remotely, share notes, files, and research bibliographies. This session will provide an overview of several categories of collaboration tools, including Evernote, Dropbox, Zotero, Google Drive, and Google Hangout, and will discuss issues such as system requirements, password overload, content preservation and privacy.

  • June: Systematic Reviews The volume of clinical research evidence is rapidly growing, and clinicians may find multiple research studies addressing the same clinical question. A systematic review answers a clinical question by finding and evaluating all available research evidence. It is a form of research that provides a summery of clinical studies on a specific clinical question, using explicit methods to identify relevant studies, critically appraise their quality, and synthesize the evidence. Clinicians may use systematic reviews to inform patient care decisions. The session will discuss the basic principles of systematic reviews and differences between systematic reviews and other types of reviews. It will review resources for systematic reviews and introduce the steps taken to conduct a systematic review on a given clinical question.
