Macomb-OU INC series to focus on Lean thinking for startups

Sterling Heights, Mich. – The Macomb-Oakland University INCubator is launching a new Startup Lean program in September as part of the OU Lean Diversification Program. The program will run from 8 a.m. until noon on three consecutive Tuesdays, Sept. 11, 18 and 25.

Startup Lean is targeted specifically towards startups, early-stage businesses and entrepreneurs. The Green Belt and Black Belt Certificate programs – also part of the OU Lean Diversification Program – are more comprehensive and beneficial to companies at any stage.

Startup Lean is designed to help new businesses get off on the right foot by learning how to use valuable Lean principles to be as efficient, creative and successful as possible from day one to full business maturity. Program courses will cover:
  • Lean principles and how they can help startups
  • How to increase value-added time
  • How to shorten product development and supply chain processes
  • How to measure actual progress
  • How to ask customers what they really value
  • How to leverage human creativity, become agile and make processes more efficient
"The Macomb-OU INCubator has successfully trained numerous existing companies in Lean through both the Green and Black programs and decided that it made perfect sense to develop a course that was shorter in duration and focused primarily on startups," said Julie Gustafson, executive director at the Macomb-OU INCubator.

Gustafson added that the philosophy behind course development was that businesses should not just become Lean; they should start Lean. The new Startup Lean program began after Macomb-OU INC surveyed more than 50 new businesses in Southeast Michigan.

The Startup Lean program will be led by Debra Setman, founder and lead adviser of Arbed Solutions, and co-founder of Michigan Lean Consortium. Tuition is $125, a discounted rate designed especially with the startup in mind. Breakfast and a mid-morning snack are included.
